FrenchFrog 0 Posted February 21, 2006 If you could go to one dive shop in Singapore (I will be there only 2 days) which would it be? I'm looking for a shop with a lot of selection so that I can browse and buy on the spot not order. I want to try different brand of wetsuits mostly and see if I get tempted by anything else and see if the offering are any different than in the states. Thanks Sylvie
3@5 0 Posted February 21, 2006 hey sylvie, when i lived in singapore ( 2 years ago) i used to always go to a shop in Lucky Plaza on Orchard Rd. The name of the shop now escapes me but when you enter Lucky Plaza go to the lowest level and the shop will be on the back wall and it has a corner position. It has many many dive bags presented outside, and it has a wide selection of products inside, even though the shop looks very cramped. beware that there are a few other dive shops in lucky plaza but they are not as well stocked as this one. if not you have Richmond wich is on the Concorse shopping centre on Beach Rd (right next to the Gateway buildings designed by I.M Pei that are a landmarck in my mind in SIN). Hope you enjoy your short stay there a bientot, /paul ps: you will have a tough time finding anything larger than a 3mm wetsuit in SIN, the local waters don't really call for anything thicker... whitehead 0 Posted February 22, 2006 If you limited to one, and considering that dive shops are usually brand specific, I would head to the concourse building also as it has 3 dive shops, waikiki, oceanic and richmond. BTW the shop Paul is describing in Lucky Plaza is "Paris". This is also a shop I like has they have lots of knicknacks. Know the price first though if you are shopping in Lucky plaza, I have found Paris very reputable but not all the vendors in that building.
jbonehoss 0 Posted February 22, 2006 I have had good luck at Lucky plaza as well. Remember to bargain for their "best price". As mentioned above lots of good knicknacks, but I don't know how good their wetsuit selection is though...
frogfish 5 Posted February 22, 2006 1. I believe Richmond in the Concourse Mall is the only Scubapro distributor. Their regulator servicing is very good, but there's usually a wait so it's not ideal for visitors. 2. There is very a good Halcyon distributor. SILENT EXPLORER 111A Jalan Besar Singapore 208831 Republic of Singapore Tel. +65 6299 6800. Talk to Leung Waimun. 3. The DiveRite distributor (also the IANTD and handles other tech diving gear) is: KONI Investment Pte Ltd., 196 Pandan Loop #07-08 Singapore 128384 Call Priscilla on 93832255 or Mr Khoo' on 96317557. 4. Divemasters Pratama Pte Ltd (315 Outram Road #09-07 TAN BOON LIAT BUILDING Singapore 169074), Tel 62260991) handle APEKS regulators FORCE fins, a few other items. Scubadru could provide more and better info, but I think he's on a plane about now. Frogfish
Drew 0 Posted February 22, 2006 Concourse Mall is good. Always bargain. Paris in Lucky Plaza can give good deals if you bargain. The other places (esp the one opposite paris whose name escapes me) are the dealers for Beuchat and I think Zeagle. There is a custom wetsuit maker whose shop I can't remember the name of. You can try another Oceanic shop at Shaw Center. They do work with the guy. I've only seen his work once so I can't vouch for the workmanship. The guy at Oceanic is called Sean. He can get stuff at very decent prices but is a dealer of none.
cor 0 Posted February 22, 2006 I can recommend buying a custom made wetsuit in Singapore made by a company called Acronman. Unfortunately their website (www.acronman.com) seems to be messed up right now, but we've bought several wetsuits from them, the last being shipped to us in the US only 2 weeks ago. They'll come to your hotel room the moment you land to measure, and the next day you'll have a custom made suit. It's quite cheap compared to US prices. They'll keep your sizes on file so you can order again later. You can reach them at acron@singnet.com.sg. They came recommended to me by Wakatobi Resort whos divemasters all use that company I think, Cor
FrenchFrog 0 Posted February 23, 2006 Well, I'm amazed about how many responses I have gotten. Thanks to all of you and hopefully I'll find something that I like. May try the custom fit. Thanks again Sylvie
mattdiver 0 Posted February 26, 2006 Good advice so far. One final tip, just in case: if you are a dive professional (i.e. DM, Instructor, etc.), bring along your cert card, as you'll get a 20% discount at Richmond...
