rodriguezfelix 0 Posted March 17, 2006 Since i didn´t buy a port yet, I wonder if I should get the Sigma 28-70 or the Nik 60mm, I read that the Sigma do everything the 60mm can do, and I like the zoom feature to get medium angle shots.... I don´t know....
KenByrne 0 Posted March 17, 2006 Assuming you mean the Nikon 60mm Micro this is going to be a better choice than the Sigma 28-70 zoom. The Nikon lens is a true macro lens with focusing down to 1:1 so your subject size can be the same size as your sensor. The Sigma will not focus as close, the longer end of the zoom is similar to the Nikon and the wide angle is not really wide enough particulary on a digital camera with a 1.5 crop. Steve Simonsen 0 Posted March 17, 2006 May I suggest that to all those trying to make the decision as to which lenses to buy. Take a look at each members stats and many list the type of equipment they own/use. You'll notice that the 60 mm Micro comes up again and again and is a favorite of many underwater shooters both for macro and fish shots. The 105 mm Micro is even better. But I would suggest starting with the 60 mm. Steve
rodriguezfelix 0 Posted March 17, 2006 This is true.... but with time new lenses are released like Sigma 17-70mm wich supposed to be a really good lens, so if in the years to come zoom lenses reach the quality of prime lens for macro or wide angle, stick with the same old lens is not the brighter idea... So if I can take a barracuda and a gobby in the same dive, why stick just with the gobby? besides this, if you look pro´s equipment you´ll see different options like 12-24, 10.5 or 10-20 for WA and everybody is going to tell you that all are very good lens, but not everybody have 2.000$ to expend in the three, even more you can take only one each dive.... Is my humble opinion...
Cerianthus 55 Posted March 17, 2006 I would really suggest going for the 60mm as well. I'm not sure anymore if you meant the 28-70 or 17-70 or that the latter was a typo, these type of lenses dont focus very close which will limit your possibilites. you might get the barracuda with the zoom, but not the goby .... apart from that it's the F2.8 that will make your autofocus just that easier. (if the 28-70 you meen is alos f2.8 you wont find a port, thos things are hughe Gerard
rodriguezfelix 0 Posted March 18, 2006 not a typo, i start asking about 28-70 but then I pùt in the picture the new Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC macro lens, (wich by the way I think I´m getting soon) wich is 1:2.3 and f2.8, close enough for 1:1 of the 60mm, and is supposed a well build, a really fast AF lens, and I guess that can get the gobby just as good.... of course is not a prime lens but I think could do the job really well as I heard... KenByrne 0 Posted March 18, 2006 Looks like it could be a nice general purpose lens. Port could be a problem at 17mm you'd really want a dome port but using macro at 70mm a flat port would be better. It's only F2.8 at the wide end and quite a bit slower at F4.5 at 70mm, not that this is necessarily a problem. Also it's not 1:1 like the Nik 60mm it's 1:2.3 so your smallest subject is slightly over twice the size of the smallest subject the Nik can shoot. Again not necessarily an issue just something to be aware of.
