Wetpixel Bahamas Trip

Recommended Posts

Hi Gang,

I'm home in one piece with almost no "adventures in travel."

I wanted to start a new thread so that as our group trickles home and starts going through our images, we have a new thread for them (not in the video forum).

In any case, I came home with about 50 shots that I am really really pleased with. Not bad for a week's diving. I'll be posting some soon.

Cheers

James

Nice tiger!! I was bummed out all week because I didn't get to go this year (although Fiji for 3 weeks is going to be sweet.) I've been following the other thread and it looks like you had an outstanding week.

Anxiously awaiting the flood of shark images.

One thing about this dive is that the Tigers that are swimming by are easily as big as most of the white sharks at Guadalupe. This photo at the surface, w/ the reflection of the shark above really reminds me of the popular Guadalupe images.

These sharks were easily as big (up to probably 14 feet) and probably just as "formidable" but we didn't need a cage. Well, maybe we did...

Cheers

James

You're lucky they may have confused bad taste with taste bad. ;):)

Nice shot James. Looking forward to the rest.

I, too, am sorting through my photos (just got home late last night), and am happy with some of the shots I got. It'll take a day or two to get them organized and up on my website, but here are a couple for starters.

BTW, it was great getting to meet and dive with some of the Wetpixel "celebrities" (e.g., Eric, James & Alex) - the salon was brimming with photographic talent and knowledge (not to mention wall-to-wall camera gear!), and I really enjoyed getting to know the real life people that go with the online personas...

Also BTW, Tiger Beach really was a great place for the Magic Filter. I used it on two mid-day dives there (one with 15mmFE and the other with 24mm) and was very happy with the results!

this trip looks nuts!

only one thing more insane than getting this close to tigers and great hammerheads - and that's jumping in with a load of bronze whalers in a sardine feeding frenzy. But you guys would never dream of doing something like that would you ? ;)

Great shots, this trip must have been 1 week of pure adrenalin. Maybe I need to do one of these sometime

I admire your insanity :)

I talked with Al yesterday, he had a great time being used as "bait" on the trip!

;) To be perfectly honest, Dave, I think most of us felt like "bait" at one time or other during this trip. :D Al just wore that title with more pride! :)

Thanks guys.

One of my goals for this trip was to shoot some shark portraits. I ended up using a 24-70mm lens set at 50mm and I'm quite pleased w/ the results. It was frustrating waiting and waiting for a tiger to come close enough, but when we got a "player" it was worth it.

And a lemon shark portrait:

Lighting for these is a single Ikelite SS200 strobe.

Looks like you guys had a great trip. It sounds like you had a few of the really big players that didn't show for our trip.

Must admit I got that 'bait' feeling at Mt Mokarran when the tigers were getting a bit frisky and I turned round to find I was the only one left in the water!

I look forward to the rest of your pictures.

OK, I finished posting the best of my photos from this trip on my website:

My Bahamas 2006 Shark Page

My wife was particularly "impressed" with this series: ;)

BTW, I'm still waiting for James to post his amazing shot with the moray, reef shark and boat above! If I'd taken that, I'd already be arranging for a framed 20-inch print to hang on my wall! B)

Wow, that's awesome Bruce! A tiger shark "gullet shot!" I bet that was a very exciting sequence to shoot.

They sure do look funny when they stick their "nose" up like that though, don't they? Sort of like a mupped or a platypus?!?!?!

OK, I'm off to take a look at the rest of your photos now. I'll go dig up the reef shark photo too.

Cheers

James
