POTW - Plants

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone -

I just had a look at the current POTW entries. 6 out of 22 entries are non-plants (gorgonians, anemones, etc.)., 7 were focused on an animal among seagrass or algae, there was 1 wide angle & 1 O/U which included some plants.... which means only 7 are real plant shots. Obviously plants are not a favorite subject for UW photographers! Guess they're not pretty enough. I agree that the topic didn't specific just plants or rule out animals among plants, but come on..... gorgonians? a seahorse among gorgonians? crinoids?

I hate to think that people really don't know the difference between a sea fan or a crinoid and a seaweed. I'd rather assume that they just wanted to post an image & that was the closest they had. Or do we need a discussion about the difference between true plants & animals that look like them?

By my math it is even worse. Algae is not a true plant either (though probably should be close enough to plant for the to qualify for the Plant POWT). So I only count 6 pictures which include a true plant anywhere in the picture. When you discard the pictures in which the plants are not the subject I am down to 4 out of 22.

I've also noticed pictures in previous weeks getting posted that are not even related to the current POTW topic...not sure if the forum is being moderated.... Herb used to take care of this..

I'll work on getting moderators access to the admin area of the POTW...

I'd guess that most of the entries were tropical! No lack of plants around here (Britain). Kelp by the forest load here.

Kelp is algae not a plant.....You really need to go freshwater to find plants underwater as about the only marine underwater plant is seagrass.

I was going to add a couple of pictures from my 2 fresh water aquariums that are done in Takashi Amano style with real UW plants. Would that have been acceptible in this forum? Most people don't think to take pictures of their home fish tanks to enter in contests.

I think due to the fact there are so few true (kingdom) plants in the marine environment, not terristrial w/ roots in the water or something green that looks like a plant, people that added their pictures to that POTW contest took some liberties. The current contest on couples could be a couple of rocks or a nice looking pair of backscatter. I think the true intent was probably a couple of people. But, a couple of gorgonian? A couple of fish? Sure. Where does it stop? If you really want to get technical there are few pictures in the Plants POTW contest. Some just took a liberty that has been taken in other galleries.

My 2 cents

I'm not going to argue!

Suffice it to say that I've seen cuttlefish entered into fish competitions! There's got to be some leeway, but......

Plenty of seagrass around Britains, I'm hesitant to say meadows....

i think many subjects are appealing in a context. my submissions i hope show this. i think it adds interest, and perspective. i dont want to be controversial, but there seem to be alot of shots rewarded which when you come down to it are snapshots. I use as an example, pygmy seahorse. while technically challenging most including my own, arent very artisically rendered or creative. yet most contests seem to have one placing at some level. now go ahead and shoot me down!

This would be a great topic for another thread Mrbubbles! You should post it as a new topic. The rationale for this one is why people submitted non-plant/non-algae images (I still consider algae to be plants) into a POTW contest entitled "Plants". I remain baffled....
