Manual contorllers needed or not?

Recommended Posts

 And heck, while I'm at it....

With the D100-Dual DS-125 in Ikelite housing....I used dual manual controllers wired into a dual cable going into the housing. It worked great! Much better than just the 3 position DS-125 ajdustment. Much more convenient too!

Now, I've upgraded to the new D200 housing, new DS-125's with I-TTL and the new I-TTL cords....

I'm told I don't need those manual controllers and just wire the strobes right into the housing. What do y'all think?

That being said, and if y'all concur, looks like I may have a couple of manual controllers to sell.

Thanks to all, in advance, for your great help on this board!

Ron

Definitely get rid of the manual controllers.....too much bulk and the TTL/Manual dial on the back of the housing is even easier to use

The only negative is that both strobes will have the same power level....with the controllers you can adjust them independently....if you need different light levels, just move one strobe farther away

I would not say you need to buy them but since, you allready have them I would keep them for backup purposes.

They are also nice if you ever want to use your strobes topside.

Oh yea, this was the justification I used when I purchased my first DS125, the missus was sold on the idea until she saw the size of the thing.

The thought of me turning up with my camera with a DS125 strapped to the top for her friends wedding was too much for her to bear

Add in a manual controller and she would have gone into orbit and I would have had to go to the gym just to be able to carry it about.

I still have my manual controller and will keep it around for awhile as a backup. I am a huge fan of the ROC control on the L&M Titan housing (which acts like a manual controller) but when I upgrade to a D200, I'll probably go Subal. They won't have ROC, and to me it is a pain in the ass to keep making strobe adjustments on the strobes themselves, especially when you have only a short opportunity to capture an animal.
