DesertEagle 2 Posted May 9, 2006 I have 8 vacation days that need to be used between September and December. My favorite subjects are sharks and soft corals. After seeing Michael O'Neil's beautiful photos from Fiji, my initial inclination was go do some diving in Beqa lagoon. The problem is that the bull sharks might be gone by the time I get there in the fall. My other choice is Tahiti. The flights are cheap (relatively). I'm most interested in Moorea due to its beauty and close proximity to Papeete. Has anyone been to both? Any advice is welcome!
subpilotpaul 0 Posted May 18, 2006 Bula Vinaka, If you want to see sharks then it would be Tahiti but I would consider a short flight to the Tuamotos and more specifically Rangiroa. I did not see too many soft corals in Tahiti but plenty in Fiji. Clear as mud? Paul
NPSParkRanger 0 Posted May 19, 2006 I went to Moorea a few years back. When I was there I did not dive though. BUT it is easily accessible from the mainland by a ferry and is a very pretty spot. BUT there is still a heavy French influence and lots of French people there. That maybe desirable for ya… or it may not! Good luck!
DesertEagle 2 Posted May 19, 2006 Fiji it is. I just arranged flights for the first week of September. Based on some posts here, I'll do the first 4-5 days diving the Bligh waters with Kai Viti divers. Then I will have to decide to stay there or head to Beqa for the shark feed dives. Plus there's lots on land to do and see, people are very warm, not nearly as expensive as Tahiti. There's lots of white tips and occasional Bronze Whalers to get your heart started. mrbubbles 0 Posted June 16, 2006 we're going to fiji the first week of sept to wanavau resort. Fiji has great overall variety from soft corals to schools to great macro. We were in rangaroa 3 years ago. Altho it was the clearest and most beautiful water ive ever seen, there is less variety. It was mainly shark diving in rocky terain, altho we did land based, and only on that island. Maybe we'll see jack c. or desert eagle there.
