I regularly travel on Malaysia Airlines. Although they regularly win some sort of awards for their cabin crew, I've never found them to be exceptional, if only for a couple of long-haul flights to Europe... I'd say they're just a notch down from Singapore Airlines...

No experience with Malaysia Airlines, but Cathay Pacific has a May Deal of the Month that you might be interested in instead (if you leave on September 30 -- maybe the June Deal of the Month will include October departures :P ):

that is a sick deal.

I flew Cathay pacific to Hong Kong several times. Granted it was about 10 years ago, but they are a quality outfit. I prefer Singapore Airlines, but Cathay is the next in line in my book for flying to Asia.

I have flown to Bali (from UK) on both Malaysian Airlines and Singapore Airlines. I find both are decent carriers. I'd put Singapore slightly ahead, but then I prefer KL Airport (Malaysian) to Singapore (Sing) as a hub. Also the standard of both drops a lot on their short haul flights (although you do get the bonus of getting metal cuttlery to eat with). Singapore have inflight wireless Internet, Malaysian do not.

On my first trip to Bali Malaysian lost my camera case in KL (turned up in Bali a day late). And on my last trip to Bali our Singapore Airlines 747 broke down in Singapore (it is slightly concerning when it all goes dark and even the emergency lights don't come on). I am going back to Bali in August and we are going with Malaysian Airlines again this year.

I have also just been to Sipadan and went with Malaysian - and that was great. Definitely better than flighing Delta for the WP/JASA shark trip, a month or so before.

All those airlines have cheaper flights that time of the year. I think that the Malaysian ones kick in in mid August and the Singapore ones at the beginning of September.

I have used Malaysian Airlines several times, and no complains whatsoever... Flying from Amsterdam or Frankfurt to KL and then to Bali.... Always OK.

Flown to Bali on many, many occasions, over the last 25 years with most of the carriers. Malaysian Airlines are okay and you'll have no probs with them, especially with carry-on and hold luggage. Make sure you have your Divers Certification Card handy. Good hub at KL with short distances between sky docks.

If you have a bit of time then the Pan Pacific Kuala Lumpur International Airport Hotel, is worth a visit for a decent meal and a brush up.

Hope this helps.

Hi !

Take the money and run!

There is no reason to pick another carrier over Malaysian Air if flying coach, which your pricing level indicates. And from either standpopint there is no reason to choose Changi over KLIA when transiting to Bali, or vice-versa.

Now if you eventually choose to sit up front, then Sinagpore Air is always my first choice. They are a cut above everyone else flying those routes when Biz or 1st Class is the option.

Per Alex's comment about internet: My last flight on SA, LAX to SIN in February, Singapore did not have internet service on that route. They do not have that service on all routes or on all equipment.

Thanks for your advice !

I found a flight from New York to Bali with Singapore Airlines for 1.185$. I think I will be finally flying with Singapore airlines because I have a direct flight from Turks & Caicos to New York and that will save me some money and time.

I found out that Malaysia Airlines doesn't have flights leaving from New York.

David,

You'll love flying SQ....they are a great airline and I'd choose them in a minute over Malaysia Air if the pricing is the same. FYI, Malaysia Air DOES fly out of Newark, daily!

David, I fly to Malaysia quite a bit (actually, I'm writing this from KL). I gave up on MH (Malaysia Airlines) about a year ago. Now I use SQ. There's a big difference for about the same cost. Take my reccomendation with a grain of salt, as it's all from the first class cabin.

As a simple transfer hub, KLIA is a great airport; new, uncrowded and quick. If you have any kind of layover (like the kind you'd sleep or go shopping on), I far prefer SIN, as it's 10 minutes by cab to downtown Singapore, and KL is easily 45 minutes to an hour from KLIA, depending on traffic.

Have fun!

All the best, James

Worth noting, I think, that the New York-Singapore SQ flights is currently the longest nonstop commercial flight in the world, slightly longer than their LAX-Singapore flight. In the past, on this route, I have opted to pay up a bit more for their executive economy class. It costs more than economy, but far less than business class. The main advantage is that you get much more room ... better seat and much more legroom. Also, the seats are configured more like 2-3-2 rather than 3-5-3 or similar in economy. I highly recommend this for six-footers on an 18-hour flight.

Also, Malaysia Airlines still has, I believe, a promotion with American Express that provides two Business Class tickets for the full fare price of one when the cost is charged to an Amex Platinum card. Malaysia has upgraded its Business Class to virtually lie-flat seats in a pod-type arrangement. It's very nice, and worth considering at half the regular price (with the promo).

Actually, this is the EWR-SIN flight, NOT the JFK-SIN flight. The SQ flight from JFK to SIN makes a stop in Frankfurt and is on a 747. The Newark (EWR) to Singapore flight is on a smaller plane (A-340 500) but is much more comfortable. You also get a 110v outlet for your laptop. It'll cost you twice as much as the Cathay Pacific deal at the moment, though. When I booked my whole air itinerary through SQ, they threw in my connecting flights to and from Washington, DC for free so that helped out a bit. Additionally, if you are a FF point junkie note that most of the bargain basement deals don't come with miles. The EWR-SIN flight does. Probably not important enough as a sole decision point, but if you need a few extra Star Alliance points you might take that into account.
