ornate_wrasse 0 Posted June 11, 2006 A local dive shop is planning a trip to Bega Lagoon Resort in February 2007. I read some negative comments on this place in the December 2005 Chapbook put out by Undercurrent. The diving didn't sound that spectacular, although everyone said the rooms were large and the location had lots of interesting topside activities. I was also wondering how friendly the place was to u/w photographers and what kinds of shots worked best (macro or wide angle). I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks! John Bantin 101 Posted June 11, 2006 My article about diving with the BAD boys (Beqa Advanture Divers) will be on line at www.divernet.com in at the end of the month. Here‘s a little photo to be going on with!
ornate_wrasse 0 Posted June 11, 2006 John, That's some photo! Looks like it has Big Teeth I look forward to reading your report. Thanks, Ellen
RickM 0 Posted June 11, 2006 Been several years since I've been, so I won't try to make any detailed comments. The resort has changed hands since I was there, but the accommodations and food were outstanding. From the looks of the pics on their website things haven't changed all that much. Diving operations were very good also. DM's were great - saw a picture in Scuba Diving mag a while back of one of our DM's so they seem to still be using the same guys. All the people on the island were very friendly. Sites we dove ranged from OK to spectacular! One can only hope that things haven't changed for the worse in the last couple years. Michael 0 Posted June 23, 2006 I was there in August 05 for Dive New Zealand and it was outstanding. It's very well balanced, with one of the best shark dives in the world (up to eight species in a single dive) plus very good Indo Pacific marcro goodies in the lagoon. If you're interested in bull sharks, it doesn't get better. Here they come pretty close - I had them getting tangled in my sync cords a few times and even removed my camera lanyward from my wrist so I wouldn't get dragged by a shark. Please note the bulls are seasonal, leaving in October or so and returning in the beginning of the year. Beqa Adventure Divers is an excellent, safe operation. Beqa Lagoon Resort is good, clean, convenient and quiet. Here's a link to some favorites: http://mpostock.com/fiji.html This is a popular image. Shot with a 16mm on film. It's Grandma, one of their largest bulls (~12ft and around 500-600lbs.) next to Rusi.

David White 0 Posted July 12, 2006 Ellen, We visited Beqa Lagoon in March 2005 and were suitably impressed. The resort is luxuriously spacious, with excellent food and accomodating hosts. John Bantin's report sums up the Big Fish Encounter very descriptively. We were blessed to encounter seven species of shark on our two dives including Scarface, the 14' Tiger shark. During our week long stay we visited several different sites and the divemasters excelled at locating all the macro subjects. Their boat is fast, their attention to safety is unparalleled and it is worth the price of admission just to listen to Manassa's stories. Go ahead and book the trip...you won't be disappointed.
