Clarence 0 Posted July 3, 2006 Hi, I'm a beginner and want to buy an U/W housing for my D70 with limited budget. Does anyone has any comments on the captioned brand? Please advice. Thanks, Clarence
mattdiver 0 Posted July 3, 2006 Here's a quick run-down of some essential differences: - Housings from both brands are made of clear polycarbonate - 10Bar housings are rated deeper than Ikelite (90m v/s 60m) - The Ikelite D70 is a bit more ergonomic (I'm referring specifically to the sub-comand dial location, which is not on the 10Bar) - 10Bar offers extension rings, which means you potentially need to buy less ports... - ... but the 10Bar dome is 5", while the Ikelite's biggest dome is 8" (better). - One last but important thing to consider is service. If you're in the US, Ikelite is likely to be easier to service, but I'm not so sure about 10Bar (I'm just not familiar with their distribution network there). If you're in Asia, it would be the other way round.

JackConnick 76 Posted July 14, 2006 The 10 Bar Housings are being distributed by Fantasea. A couple of points: Ike is very well established, has better technology, controls and overall durability. Lots of people use them so you can find good support. The housings support a wider array of lenses particularly wide angle with their new 8†dome. Many photographers use them. But their housings are big and they have had some quality control issues on and off, depending on who you talk to. Their service is very good in the US. TTL is limited to Ikelite strobes. More expensive overall. Fantasea is a newer player. The housings are lighter and more streamlined. They do support lenses as wide as 15mm with a 5†dome, and macro with 2 different macro ports and extension rings. Nice accessories for arms, focus lights, etc. Their housings use standard Nikon 5 pin sync, so TTL is available on a very wide array of strobes. They have an inexpensive housing for the SB800 iTTL strobe, a very nice macro/portrait setup. Fantasea also comes with free DEPP flood insurance for a year. Service is through Vancouver, Canada.
