Best LCD Monitors

Recommended Posts

I am in the market for an LCD flat-panel computer monitor and I am looking for some advice as to the best one. I don't want to spend more than $500 and would prefer a monitor not smaller than 19". Here are the contenders I have collected so far: Dell Ultra-Sharp 1907FP, Viewsonic VP930b, and the Samsung SynchMaster 970P. Each model has its own fine attributes, but I was wondering if one stands out as the best for displaying and manipulating photographs or ones that I should avoid for those purposes. I would appreciate any advice anyone can provide. Thanks!

Hi Gang,

I wanted to bring this back to the top as I'm in the market for an LCD to replace my ailing 19" Trinitron CRT. I'm interested in something that does at least 1600 pixels width and for can be color calibrated for photo work. Some of the monitors sold by Dell get good marks, but who makes them??

Oh, and I'm looking for something under $1,000 if that's possible, so I'm not sure if I can get an Eizo or Lacie. Thoughts?

Thanks

James

You can get an Eizo CE for about $1150. You can also get Eizo Flexscan S2000 for $890, which has a 1600x1200 native resolution. I can't speak to the quality of the Flexscan, but I can say something about Eizo.

I've got an Eizo 22" top of line a couple of years ago. It was a demo unit from Chromix and was definitely over $1000. The monitor is, in a word, awesome. Nothing I've looked at since comes close.

I can't recommend a monitor in the $500-$1000 range because I just haven't seen any anywhere near as good as mine in that price range. I just don't know where to begin. I do know that the difference between my home office and work office is night and day. This is probably a good thing as I would spend my work day working in Photoshop.

I use the dual Dell 20" widescreen and they are great. Obviously they aren't AS great as the Eizo. But they absolutley are able to be calibrated and can show enough of the gamut to get the job done well. I find that I loose a very small amount of shadow detail, but the highlight range seems perfect.

I have an Eizo CG211, true colors, integrated calibration, rotatable for larger horizontal or landscape working space (which is really cool since the photoshop menues are also rotating to the left side when rotating the screen to vertical). I use it together with a second screen (old and cheap Dell 19" TFT) for Photoshop on which I have all the Photoshop tools available but the Eizo 21" is only for the picture working space.

Hi Gang,

I ended up getting a Sony P234 23" display for $600. It had been in the store for a while and they just wanted to finally sell it. I looked at the LaCie and Eizo displays and they are super nice but almost 3x the price. Hopefully the Sony will calibrate well.

Cheers

James

James,

To bring this back to the top, how are you getting on with your LCD? I am looking at the ViewSonic VX and VG series, or a NEC to replace my big ol' Trinitron CRT.

Thanks!

Dave

EDIT: Sorry just noticed the other thread concerning this subject. See your now using a Dell....
