D80: It's Official.

Recommended Posts

Yeah, fair call Kees... it was a rush job the other day. But I'd still be very surprised if the buttons lined up on a D70 housing. It would be great if they did, but given the size differences and the alternative button/dial arrangement, it just doesn't look like it will work to me. Happy to be proven wrong though.

To my eyes the D80 looks very similar in size to the D50. I know that there aren't loads of D50 housing options available - Ike and Sea&Sea being the main ones.

But I would think that this camera might fit in a D50 housing?

Check out the images below - borrowed from the excellent reviews on DPReview - which show that the physical dimensions are almost identical.

It still only has one command dial, though!

Sorry I am completely wrong about that, Mike. I was looking at the pic of the D50! Duuuh.

The D80 have 2 command dials - which also means it won't be controllable from existing D50 housings - there goes another theory!

I'll get it to fit into my nexus housing, shoot, it is smaller than d70..it's gota fit.. damn, this thing is so advanced who needs all them buttons to line up anyway! Just need shutter release and set to Auto U/W mode, right? Or, am I missing something?

I don't think current D200 owners need to mope about this, unless of course they were thinking of selling up! You've got a camera that is broadly speaking the equal of the D80 (albeit faster and of superior build quality), and you won't have to wait ages for body/housing availability.

The current crop of 8-10 megapixel SLRs deliver more than most of us need. I work for a diving magazine, and I know a horizontal D200 image will crop to a cover shot. As for competitions, the file size and overall quality will keep these cameras at the forefront for a good few years. So my advice is not to worry, but to keep an eye out for the big breakthroughs that signal radical new opportunities in underwater imaging.

Speaking of which, would it be poor form to house an endoscope to take a photo of a pearlfish? B)

Hi, so finally the Nikon guys have another reason to switch camera models. I wonder what will happen to me as a Canon user. I bet Photokina in Germany will tell us. Also IFA in Berlin is ahead. We will post you with news.

We have put some info on DIGIDEEP.com, too:

http://www.digideep.com/english/info/html/...80-dsrl-camera/

The product page will be filled with more manufacturers, as we ring them down today:

http://www.digideep.com/english/digital/ph...kon/D80/25/2567

Please have a little patience for the compatability chart.

Andi

If the D80 fits the D50 housing, can Ike add a second command dial lever in the D50 housing by request? If so, it could be an upgrade option for D50 owners...

it looks like the current d70 housings are the best candidates.

I checked some materials provided by Nikon, here's what I've found:

There is a picture I have seen: overlapping D80 with 200, 70s, 50.... just like what you have mentioned, the size of D50 is the closest one to D80.

Then D80 is using pentaprism, but unlike D200, D80 does not support manual lens light detection. Here are the other differences b/w D200 and D80, according to the review:

D80 3fps....(D200 =5fps)

Image Buffer 6 RAW...(D200 =22)

Multiple exposure 3.....(D200 =9)

Shutter speed 1/4000 ...(D200 1/8000)

X-sync 1/200...not 1/250

Using non-CPU lenses it only support M-mode, no TTL....(can't use Ai-S.....ZF lenses in A-mode)

Has only 3 AF mode (omitted the closest subject.....)

420-pixel RGB metering II.....not 1005-pixel

Exposure step 1/3 and 1/2.... omitted 1

Take away the switchable 11/7(wide) AF points, Group AF zones........only normal/wide center AF

2 channel image processing only vs. D2x/D200 has 4 channel processing

But comparing the price, D80 is a good deal.....

Anyone know why the X synch is reduced to 1/200th? Seems strange as this suggests it is different shutter to all other Nikons? Surprised it isn't sharing parts?

After taking loads of heat while we all awaited the D2x, Nikon has kind of taken off with a couple really great cameras now that thier flagship model is more than a year into sales. No doubt they were trying not to cannibalize sales from those waiting for the D2x, by offering the D200 and D80. And I feel kind of violated!

With the sole exception of pixel count vs. cost though, I cannot imagine why any D200 owner would pine for a D80.

I believe the D200 has the best capability/cost quotient that any maker currently offers (including the D80 and Canon 5D). It is a superb camera and value. It appears that the D80 is a fairly substantial upgrade from a D70, but it appears to fail the level of a D200.

Recognizing this camera will be attractive to many people on a budget, Nikon made a good decision fitting it with SD media which, for the careful shopper, is less than half the cost for same size and speed in CF.

Will the D70s be cheaper now?

While it lasts...

I imagine it will be slowly phased out over the coming months.
