bertschb 0 Posted September 2, 2006 I have a Canon 10-22mm lens and I just got the Ikelite 8" dome port. I have dual DS-125 strobes. Should I get the lens hood for this lens? I'm not sure if that will help with flare or backscatter or ??? Obviously I'm new to this..... Thanks! Brian
dmoss 0 Posted September 2, 2006 (edited) Hello Brian The lens hood for the 10-22 won't fit inside the port so you can't use it underwater. For topside, the hood helps some with flare, but it doesn't stick out very far from the end of the lens so it doesn't help much. I have the hood, but seldom use it. To help with backscatter, get as close as possible to the subject and aim the strobes straight ahead. I use 2 x 8" ULCS arms on each side. Another thing you might try is using the Magic Filters with this lens without any strobes. Works well under the right conditions and eliminates the backscatter problem. Hope this helps. bertschb 0 Posted September 3, 2006 That does help, thanks. I was looking at the Ike 8" dome on their web site and saw a hood on the lens (not sure what lens it was). That made me wonder if I should be using a hood. But, that must have been a different lens. I also noticed Ike is showing a new Port Shade. That looks interesting. Any thoughts on the port shade? I may try the Magic Filter soon. I have too much to learn and not enough dive trips to practice. I live in Oregon (USA) and I do a lot of diving here but I never take my SLR on those dives because the vis is bad and there isn't much color compared to the tropics. dmoss 0 Posted September 3, 2006 Brian The lens shown on the Ike website is probably a 15mm Fisheye lens that has the hood permanently attached to the lens. The Sigma 15mm is designed that way as are others. I plan on getting one of the 8" port shades when they become available.
bertschb 0 Posted September 3, 2006 I plan on getting one of the 8" port shades when they become available. Interesting you mention the Ike port shade for the 8" dome. I just asked Ryan at Reef Photo to reserve one for me. Do you know anything about this shade? Does it require and over/under strobe placement or can I position the strobes anywhere I want? I don't really understand the design of lens hoods/port shades. Seems like the sides of these devices should be uniformally shaped. The "petal" design confuses me. Thanks again for your help. dmoss 0 Posted September 3, 2006 The petal design of a port shade and on lens hoods for wide angle lenses helps to reduce vignetting at the corners of an image when shooting wide. Telephoto fixed and zoom lenses have hoods that are more 'uniformally shaped' .
