Aquatica Viewfinder

Recommended Posts

A while ago in the pre crash era :) of the forum somebody was inquiring about the Aquatica viewfinder, well I extorted the designer into giving me some rendering of the final product, I have spent some time with the prototype and I am happy to say it rate with the best on the market, ETA is still pending but coming up (DEMA most likely will be the place to see it, if not before).

Looks interesting. Can’t wait to try the new viewfinder!

How about price?

Can you tell me if I will be able to install the viewfinder on my D2x housing, or will I have to upgrade the rear part of my housing as Blake was speculating about earlier this year? Will it be a permanent attachment or will I be able to remove it for travelling?

Thanks for the info, I was wondering how the new viewfinder was progressing.

Thanks Jean,

I hope the extortion price was not too high - that's great news from Blake & the Aquatica team!

Please keep us posted on price & availability.

Cheers,

Sieg

Will this give us the same vision as an F3 and DA2 action finder?

Showing my age, but also why I first bought Aquatica housings :-)

Now I feel for Lance Armstrong

I have no price as of yet, but knowing Aquatica it will be affordable compared to the oversea guys, Scotdiver, you should'nt miss your F3 that much once you try this viewfinder (BTW my first Aquatica housing was a then just coming out A3 housing for my Canon F1, so I guess you must be nearing the century mark as I am ), you will have to retrofit with a new back (Blake is working the logistic for that as I write this) and yes it will be EASY to remove for travel purpose. NO special clips with a rocket science plier to remove them.

Cheers

Assuming your comment about "with the best on the market" is supported by the final product (which begs the question of what is the diopter adjustment range?), this is an amazing upgrade. My first two housings (A80 and 90SX) were Aquatica units. I only moved away from your product because of the viewfinders to be found elsewhere. It's strange to admit, but I still have some emotional investment in Aquatica products. It's great to see this improvement in the product line.

Are you going to offer a 45 as well?

If Aquatica likes to license my 45° finder design I'm open for talks. This could speed up development and cut down costs.

Hello,

I happen to be that "somebody" who made that inquiry. I have been using Aquatica housings without issue since the F3 -- and sorely miss the "wide-screen" action-finders of the old SLR days. I now have both the AD2x and the AD200 housings and would like to add the viewfinders to either or both . . .

The problem I see is that the "early" AD2x housing's opening is somewhat smaller than that of the AD200. I heard somewhere in that great and powerful rumour mill that we would be able to swap the old back out for one which would accomodate the new viewfinder. Does this also mean that we would have to rip out the factory-installed moisture alarm or would that be replaced as well? Also, how would it affect the status of the AD2x serial number which I provided my insurance carrier?

PS - maybe they can give an update about when their magnified viewfinder will be available :-)

Hi James,

I saw your comment about the new Aquatica viewfinder in the Aquatica 30D housing review.

I asked Norma about the viewfinder when I purchased a focus gear for the new Nikon 105 VR lens. She said the viewfinder should become available around the middle to late November.

That should make it a just a little too late to take on my trip to Curacao. ;):P

BTW, I was quite amazed(actually shocked!) at the focus gear for the new Nikon 105 VR lens--It reminds me of a large and very flexible rubber band with teeth molded to the outside of it.

Haven't had a chance to dive with the new focus gear, but will comment on it when I've had a chance to try it out.

We are in the final stage of getting all the puzzle piece and it actually look like the mid november, hopefully before, BTW that new VR 105 Micro is stretching the boundary, actually got a lot of people from the industry off gard, she's a large one, so conventional thinking had to go out for a walk, hence the rubber gear. making it out of alumium was out of the question, (not enough material left).

Regards

The Aquatica viewfinder is finally here.

The unit on display at DEMA is an actual production version and has recieved many favourable responses from imaging types that by all accounts would know one end of a viewfinder from the other.

Here are few shots of the viewfinder being inspected today.

Australian & South Pacific Aquatica distributor Peter Mooney ( me - it's a plug ) from Scubapix, in Cairns has secured the first five units for distribution and reports 2 left available.

Here are few images of ther viewfinder from today.

They were all loving it.

Good news from Aquatica. I can't wait to try one.

Cheers

He he, Steve looks kinda drunk in that one. :) Maybe he's used to seeing the world at 45 degrees now.

Anybody know what bore is required in the back wall of the housing to take this finder?

That's a 180° (or 0°?) straight-through finder!

hey Martyn,

I was there when Peter took took that photo and I cry "shame on you!" Steve was most gracious and I used the same finger to trigger the shutter on my old Aquatica F4s film housings! The new finder is awesome!

Just like using the old DA-20 sportfinder- finally!!

LOL, I didn't mean Steve any harm. I thinkPeter took the shot just as Steve was looking round, giving it a kind of comical look. :)

I am so glad to see these new finders coming through. I just can't wait to get my corners back.
