Recommended Posts

Has anyone used an Apple Ipod as 'storage' for the DSLR during trips? A bit more covenient to bring than a laptop.

Thoughts?

There have been a few threads on this before. Check these out

It is mentioned randomly in some other threads, but those are by far the best threads on the subject. It troubled me for a tiny while until I got my epson P2000 which works very nicely as a travel drive and temporary back up when at home.

Well mine is the old one .. but it is not that slow .. yes you can download and see RAW images you just cant do anything to them like rotate etc.

Here's some numbers for you from dpreview.com

Copy from card, CompactFlash1GB Sandisk Ultra II, 956MB, 544 files*2 469 seconds

Copy from card, SD 512MB Sandisk Ultra II, 492MB, 270 files*2 210 seconds

Copy from one album to another 956MB, 544 files 444 seconds

The p500 on the other hand is much faster at
155 seconds for 1GB of data from a Compact Flash card

Which looks like the newer ones are a tiny bit over 3 times faster than the old P2000 so I guess it is slow .. compared to mod tech !

you might also look into the "Wolverine 80GB MVP" its on sale at the moment, at costco.com, for 249, and displays both jpg and most Raw formats.

I use my iPod as a backup hard drive with my laptop, or I use it as a backup (with the iPod camera connector) to my Epson P2000 when not taking a laptop. Either way, it's a convenient backup hard drive to provide redundant image storage. I don't use it for viewing imagaes, just for security. I got the 60GB iPod for this purpose.

Thank's guys. Thank's too your advice I forget the Ipod. The Epson seems great, but a little too expensive. I've settled for a Jobo Giga something... 40 GB. Just need to have something to dump images to easily when I have to travel light (like small aircrafts inbound Africa). I have have a PC lapotop as well, and two apple powerbooks...which I can bring when curcumstances allow.

cheers
