Drew 0 Posted October 28, 2006 A compression expert named Phil Hodgetts told me just last week the differences between codecs. MPEG1=early 90s technology, bad, inefficient but widespread use due to the VCD era (like locusts, he said). MPEG4= the current compression darling, in the 14th generation (at R&D level), named many different names, VC1 (HD DVD, Blue Ray) and AVCHD (Sony & Pana) for camcorders.
