drsteve 6 Posted December 19, 2006 As usual, people only value things that they can see and understand. That is why UW photography can be a powerful force for conservation. For an interesting read on the topic of animal extinction see Last Chance to See by Douglas Adams. He has a story about visiting China to see the Yangzee river dolphin before it went extinct. The local villagers were so honored to have the foreign dignitaries that they had a banquet in their honor for which they caught and barbequed two river dolphins! I forget how many were estimated to exist at the time, but it was somewhere around 100. Sad.

So there was no way of confirming if it were true or not. Still a very sad day.
