As usual, people only value things that they can see and understand. That is why UW photography can be a powerful force for conservation.

 

For an interesting read on the topic of animal extinction see Last Chance to See by Douglas Adams. He has a story about visiting China to see the Yangzee river dolphin before it went extinct. The local villagers were so honored to have the foreign dignitaries that they had a banquet in their honor for which they caught and barbequed two river dolphins! I forget how many were estimated to exist at the time, but it was somewhere around 100. Sad.

Not quite accurate. The bbq dolphins was a letter in response to his radio show from the trip. So there was no way of confirming if it were true or not. Still a very sad day.
