105mm, 4T and Ikelite

Recommended Posts

I recently got an Ikelite "AF only" port for the old version of the 105mm, and I planning to add a 4T diopter.. so, doing a little search I found out that a couple of years ago this combination could scratch the port when it´s fully extended... So I wonder if this is still being an issue, or Ikelite solved it on newer vesions of this port??

Altough, I noticed that limit focus allows more breathing space for the lens, since don´t let it get fully extended... Am I right??

Any help?

Yes, but it kind of defeats the purpose of adding the diopter. I suspect that with the focus limited the lens won't get a high magnification, and that's the purpose of adding the diopter, right?

I don't know if Ikelite has a longer port. Let's wait to hear from others.

I also had the old 105 and a 4T, but have the manual focus port. When fully extended the diopter will touch the port. I have used it in the past in manual focus at just short of fully extended, but at 30m, some current, and pygmys its wasn't a very successful dive.

My plan is to grind off the front threads of the diopter. By my measurements, I only need to take off about 1mm or so to make it fit.

Also, I have heard that there were some third party ports for Ikelite housing, but I have never been able to find them.

Karl Dietz posted on this a while back. If I remember correctly he said the 3T diopter did not touch the port. The 4T does just touch the port at full extension. Maybe you can search for his post to be sure.

Yeap, giving a second thought... it´s sound like a dumb idea...

So far I got a couple of very good replies, but all MF/AF ports, and in all cases the ports have a good chance to get scratch...

Let´s wait to see if someone have used it on newers AF only ports.... Also I´m waiting for Ryan to confirm if it does...

I gave some thought on this too... but it doesn´t seem a good idea to grind a piece that is no longer in production an is not so easy to find... besides, with time you may want to add another filter (maybe a 3T) in a longer port or something like that.. I don´t know...

Finally I bought a 4T and test it myself... sadly I discover that it barelly touch the AF port when fully extended. Since my port was already slightly scratched I decided to do some test with AF and after a few sessions it leaves a really slightly mark on it but so slightly that you see it only if you placed against a light and doesn`t show on pictures.

I take the port to dive this weekend and scratched a little on the front trying to get an emperor shrimp, even when it doesn`t show in pics neither, I`m placing another post on how to remove scratchs on flat ports...

The Ikelite port #5508, one with the manual focus option, works with the T3/4 diopters but it's much longer than the regular port for this lens. I don't think the next smaller port (5507) is quite long enough.

I just happen to use port #5508 for a Tamron 90mm which extends way further than the Nikon 105. So I've also been able to use the Nikon + T3/4 setup with the longer port.

I just bought a Tamron 90mm SP AF Macro (not the newer DI version), and figure I'll wind up with an Ikelite housing for my D200. I was thinking the shorter one would work, as the Ikelite site says for non-focus ports this one works:

#5505.58 Lens length less than 6.1" (15.5cm)

I measure about 5 3/4" for the Tamron when fully extended, so that seems right. For flat ports with focus, the 5507 gives another centimeter:

#5507...... Lens length less than 6.5" (16.5cm)

#5508...... Lens length less than 7.5" (19cm)

So did you need the extra inch to use the diopters? I realize now I'd need the 5508 if I intend to use a teleconverter... such as Tamron's SP AF1.4X Teleconverter... and that the 43.5mm SP AF2X Teleconverter that I ordered from TheCameraBox (only $139!) probably won't fit even with the 5508!

I originally got it 'cause that's what my supplier ordered for me. I think the Ikelite website used to also recommend this port - but I'm not sure. But I do know that I was never willing to try a diopter with the lens in the 5508 port because it looked very tight.
