Dakine 0 Posted February 1, 2007 I'm upgrading to a 5D soon and I'm hoping to get some better corners and maybe go a little wider then the 27mm equivalent that I got out of the 20D and 17-40l. Does anyone have any experience with the 20mm 2.8, 24mm 2.8, 28mm 2.8 or even the 15mm fisheye with a fullframe camera and ike's 8' dome? I hear that the 15mm fisheye with a TC is another option? james 0 Posted February 1, 2007 Hi Ryan, From your list, I have experience w/ the 15mm. I also have the 24mm f1.4 The 20mm is supposed to be not good at all. The 24mm f2.8 is decent (the f1.4 is great). The 28mm f2.8 is supposed to be good. Also good are the 17mm f3.5 Tokina and the Sigma 20mm f1.8 although w/ the Sigma, you are supposed to try a few and keep the "good" one. The 15mm is a fabulous lens on this camera, you'll love it. I'd start there, and w/ your 17-40. If you want wider and sharper try the Sigma 20mm. Cheers James Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
acroporas 0 Posted February 1, 2007 I had the Canon 24/2.8 and the Canon 28/2.8 I still have the 24. The 24 was much better than the 28. Though as James said the 24/1.4 is the one to get if you've got the money. I also have the Sigma 15mm Fisheye which is supposed to be as good as the canon and a little cheaper. Paul Kay 65 Posted February 1, 2007 I have a 20 Canon which has softish corners on land but doesn't seem to get much worse underwater - I know several Pros using this lens without worry though! I'll second James's comments on the 24/1.4 - its my 'standard' underwater wide lens. I've no experience of the 24/2.8 or 28/2.8 but have a 35/2 which is 'adequate' but not a patch on the 35/1.4 so my suspicions are as already commented, that both the 24/2.8 and 28/2.8 will be adeaquate rather than stellar too. I've used various Sigmas over the years and as a generailsation I would say that their optics are pretty reasonabler but that their mechanics are not as good as those from Canon and Nikon - just my opinion though - and they become uneconomic to repair far more quickly. Dakine 0 Posted February 1, 2007 (edited) Thanks for the tips guys! It figures...the 24 2.8 is just about the only lens not eligible for the double rebate. So I might try the fisheye as well. It looks like the 24 1.4 is too damn fat again to fit through the port opening on the housing. That is my only niggle with ikelite, I hate having to take the port/lens off everytime I want to get to my flash card. The lens fits in the port just fine but it does not fit all the way through the the opening in the housing. 77mm is too fat, so you need to take the port off then unmount the lens from the camera before you can remove the camera from the housing. Stupid...I just realized that that problem was only caused by the zoom gear on the lens so that shouldn't be a problem with a prime. Dakine 0 Posted February 2, 2007 Well, I ordered the 5D, Ike's housing, the 15 fisheye and the 24/2.8 along with a bunch of other goodies. I tried to go with the 24/1.4 but my credit card started to overheat from all the action. Damn, full frame doesn't come cheap. A D200+housing costs about the same as the 5D. Proost! If you still have your 20D stuff and want to part with it, you might try listing it here in the classifieds. The fine folks at Wetpixel were good enough to relieve me of mine (along with a bunch of EF-S lenses)...which helped get me out of hot water on the home front. You'll love the 5D. Some people claim that the canon may be a little sharper in the corners but I have never seen a any comparison showing this. Biggest pro for Sigma 15mm is that focuses closer. Dakine 0 Posted February 14, 2007 Well I figured I'd let you guys know how it worked out. I had a chance to try my new gear yesterday and James was right. I think the 15mm fish is my new favorite lens. Corners are way better than my 17-40 and the perspective is awesome. I also found out that this lens is extremely resistant to flare. I love my 5D and I recommend you the Sigma 15mm FE (cheaper and focus close), Canon 24mm 1.4 or 2.8, but I am not recommend you 17-40L because it isnt't good at corners.. Don't care about 5D price, just try to get some WA pictures using your 5D and Landscape picture styles, the blue will change your mind about price... hehe.. Most of my lenses are Canons, but in this case, everything I read said there was no advantage to the Canon over Sigma, and I've been totally happy with the Sigma.
