knakatsu 0 Posted February 27, 2007 I am planning a trip to the Red Sea in June and I'm in the process of weeding out all the little things that need to be thought of in preparation - one of them is power. We will be staying in London for several days, then heading to Egypt for a week on the MV Whirlwind. Thanks to Alex, I understand that we will need to adapt for UK power and European power - both 240v, on this trip. I need to charge 4x DS-125's (not an issue becuase they came with UK/Eu adapters), camera batteries, MacBook Pro, and Dive light. Here is my question to the world traveling experts: What would you recommend as the most effecient way to do this? Thanks in advance
Scuba_SI 39 Posted February 27, 2007 Hi, If you have the new ikelite smart charger it will not fit in the electrical sockets on the charging area, due to the depth of the outdoor weatherproof socket. You might be able to sneak them down to your room to charge them, but seeing as how they do not appear to do fire drills in Egypt you might want to think against this! Inside the salon area there are lots of power outlets, and i found a few that would take my US plugs directly. I would try to take a US style 6 way gang socket that can cope with 220v and just use 1 converter, although i doubt very much you will be charging everything at once. markdhanlon 0 Posted February 27, 2007 The first question is if all the devices that you plan to use will work with dual voltage. I am in the same situation, but everything that I'm taking will work with 240V. You can find this out by checking on the device itself. For example most devices that have a plug box (like most laptops, cell phone chargers, etc.) rather than a simple plug are probably good for dual voltage. If your devices won't work on dual voltage, you will need a voltage converter (ie a transformer) to go from 240V to 120V. A good website that I have found is www.voltageconverters.com. Because I am going to a third world country, and wasn't sure about the quality of the power being used on my sensitive electronics, I picked up the following surge protector/powerbar as it surge protects at 240V rather than 120V http://www.voltageconverters.com/itemdesc....B}&ic=BB136. It has universal female plugs and comes with an EU male plug. You can also order from the same site plug adaptors to fit whatever country you need. I'm not sure what Egypt's plugs look like, but a simple search on the internet should let you know. If you have any further questions, PM me. Hope this helps.
