Steve Jones 0 Posted March 12, 2007 (edited) Does anyone know of a good web site for Compact Flash Cards and what make would you recommend? Can't advise where to buy other than ensure they are an authorised dealer. Here in the UK I tend to use www.warehouseexpress.co.uk, but I guess you will have access to cheaper sellers on your side of the pond. Personally I've used SanDisk Extreme 3 and Lexar Professional, and they are very reliable. The Extreme 4 has just come out by Sandisk, and it's very fast. Check this link out before you do anything though: http://reviews.ebay.com/FAKE-SanDisk-Extre...000000001456539 I ended up paying £180 for a fake 8GB Extreme 3 from a fraudulent seller. When I contacted him he turned out to be a really nasty piece of work, and Paypal and eBay were no help at all. Mastercard however, did look after me, and I did a successful chargeback on the basis of Item not as described. The fakes are very hard to tell apart from the originals. Lesson learned, now I will only buy from an authorised resller, and if you email SanDisk they will confirm if the seller is genuine or not. CeeDave 0 Posted March 12, 2007 Don't know about Cayman, but in the US www.egghead.com is good. Besides the Lexar's I've had good luck with the cheaper 150X Ridata cards. Chris in Red Stick
Alex_Mustard 0 Posted March 12, 2007 I have only ever used one individual compact flash card in my D2X. A Lexar 4GB Pro card, which a friend of mine bought in New York for me in 2004. I think he got it from B&H. At a conservative estimate that card has recorded over 1100 GB of images. Still going strong. Had one corruption in all that time - on transfer after a dive in the Red Sea last year - and still managed to rescue all the images. Alex
seagrant 4 Posted March 12, 2007 I had two defective Lexar CF 133X 4GB cards. They had similar serial #s and were defective (with strange problems, search for my post on that), anyway both were defective when purchased. I did get replacements from Lexar but it took some time and I had to buy another card to get me by in the meantime. I bought a SanDisk Extreme IV 8GB with the reader and is is soooooo fast!!! No problems at all. I've also had no problems with the Lexar replacement cards, but I haven't used them as much now. The SanDisk downloads so much faster and there are great $$ rebates available on it now. Personally I'll never buy Lexar again, but that is just my personal experience. Eric Cheng says the same thing because of Lexar card write problems he encountered with this Canon (again see my previous post on that). If you have a problem that costs you a bit of $$$ and images then I think it is natural to go with another brand that is trouble free for you. Just my experience, you could also research and conclude for yourself which brand is more trouble-free, Best, Carol
markdhanlon 0 Posted March 12, 2007 I've used Sandisk Ultra II's (slow), Extreme III's (faster) and IV's (fastest) and each one has been solid and reliable. I've shot about 800 GB on the Extreme III card and it still works like the day I bought it. I just got the IV and it's blazing fast. I have no need to try other brands. IMSushi 0 Posted March 12, 2007 Don't buy QMemory from the FlashMemoryStore.com I ran into horrible customer service and no product ever shipped. Word to the wise- always look up the store you intend to purchase from on the Better Business Bureau site: http://www.BBB.org They have ratings on service and products from most storefronts and web based stores. I also like: http://www.frys.com/ And http://www.egghead.com/
tdpriest 115 Posted March 19, 2007 My 2 Gb SanDisk Extreme IIIs are still going strong, and they are a wow in my (still dry) D200. I lost some images by deleting the card and then finding that my hard drive had corrupted. The SanDisk software recovered all of the missing images, including this one that I would have been frustrated to lose: Tim B)
Otara 0 Posted March 20, 2007 This site offers an idea of what speed differences you can expect with a particular card. http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_pag...p?cid=6007-8479 Otara
bmyates 3 Posted March 20, 2007 FWIW, I now just stick with Sandisk (Extreme III seem like the best combination of speed and price/value right now), and I only buy from really reliable sources - B&H and Buy.com are the two sources I use for CF and SD cards. It doesn't surprise me that there is so much counterfeiting going on - when you're talking about an item that the average user has no way of testing, it's bound to attract crooks looking for easy money; all they need to do is print new labels! Buyer beware...
