shchae 3 Posted April 2, 2007 (edited) Hi, I took over 500 macro test shots to see the diffrence in two cameras but, these two cameras are basically shows same quality pictures in general. I was hoping to see BIG difference since Fuji advertise S5pro has 400% dynamic range but, I do not see it (IMHO)yet. One thing I felt bad was slow 'reviewing' time on S5. I am used to D70 & D200's instant review (you can see result of your shot immediately so that you can continue take more pics with same setup or change f-stop,WB or ISO right there.) S5 has option to select the time (I do not know why even it is an option) & shortest time you can select is 2 sec. & I felt this 2 sec. like shutter lag on some of earlier P&S cameras. other than that, again, I do not see big difference. I was using 105mm VR w/Woodi's diopter & both camera shows same focusing habit is dark area( I guess they are using same CAM1000). Speaking of Woodi, I met him while I was taking test shots. He is still there in Anilao this week. Here is pictures; S5Pro/D200 in Nexus D200 housing + 105mm VR + Single housed SB-800 in 'TTL'mode. loftus 42 Posted April 2, 2007 Thanks for showing these pics. I'm not sure if you would expect to see a difference in your 'average' shot though. My understanding of 400% increase in dynamic range means 2 stops, and what that would translate to in practice is a broader histogram on which you could fit all your densities from dark shadow to brightest highlights. So your average shots that 'fit' the histogram without clipping should look similar. Only those where the highlights or dark shadows are off the scale might benefit. Underwater I would imagine this to be most helpful with CFWA and sunballs etc. Most well exposed macro shots should show little difference. If anybody understands this differently, I'm happy to be set straight.
Claude 0 Posted April 2, 2007 (edited) Underwater I would imagine this to be most helpful with CFWA and sunballs etc. I don't think so... basically the same as well - look at this page : http://www.aquatilia.com/S5Pro... Lionfish43 0 Posted April 2, 2007 I really wouldn't expect there to be much difference for macro shots. I think it's really in the area of wide-angle that everyone one was expecting great things from the S5. Claude's comparison shots don't show much difference between the two cameras however I have seem some rather impressive stuff posted on other boards. In my mind the jury is still out. Lionfish43 0 Posted April 2, 2007 Which boards Larry, I'd like to check them out. http://www.digidiver.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1469 http://www.digidiver.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1485 There are some other shots on that board. Of course there's lot of topside stuff on DPReview that looks pretty nice. I'll probably wait a little while to see if the price drops and pick one up in time for the Shearwater in August. Claude 0 Posted April 2, 2007 With the D200, sunballs look as good in shallow water... and I haven't seen a back to back comparison yet which demonstrate than the S5 is “better†than the D200 - but I saw a lot of topside tests which shows that the S5 pictures aren't as sharp... photovan 0 Posted April 2, 2007 - but I saw a lot of topside tests which shows that the S5 pictures aren't as sharp... In my tests I got "nice colour" straight out of the S5 which was refreshing, but I was very disappointed with resolution/detail/sharpness. While higher res isn't needed by those only showing on monitor/tv/projectors or making small reproductions, if you need detail I'm not convinced this is the camera.
