Recommended Posts

Domonique, your photos are GREAT! Very nice in color and sharp. What settings did use on the camera?

Hello,

After some time of lurking I'm going to take the time to revive this thread to ask some advice. The setup that IslandBound and Aussie have matches what I've been considering myself. However, I have a few concerns given the type of diving I will be doing...

So far I've had two alternatives open:

- G7 w. Ikelite house, DS51, WA lens and flat port

- EOS 400D, 10-22 mm, 60 mm macro w. Ikelite house, 2x DS51 and corresponding ports

I'm not entirely sure I want to invest the amount of money that a full SLR setup will cost, and from the amazing pictures in this thread it seems the G7 should serve me fairly well - at least for overseas diving.

I do basically 50% of my dives in warm water with good visibility on diving trips to the Red Sea, Asia etc. For these dives the above setup seems more than sufficient. However, the other 50% is spent at home (home being Sweden) in cold, dark water. These dives are also done on wrecks, which is the main reason I want the WA lens for the G7. I understand that an EOS 400D with the 10-22 (or a Tokina 10-17) will give me far better WA pictures, but the question is if the G7 will be an acceptable first step given that my current P&S camera is not even with me on those dives.

Also, is one strobe sufficient to begin with for WA shots in dark water?

Hope the above sheds some light on my situation... I should add that I am a complete beginner when it comes to (UW) photography.

hey guys,

update something for canon G7 housing.

now WP-DC11 can add 67mm lens.

check out this site from taiwan. here

but some people complaint that vignatte still appear.

you can see the result here. HK forum

Actually this is from hong kong forum.

for me, it's seem like the edge corner sharpness is a bit worst!

is it normal??

Here's a few test shots of my dog with a G7 in the Ikelite housing with the short port and an Inon UWL-100.

All taken at widest zoom, there is sometimes a tiny bit of vignetting but this will go with a bit of zooming. Some of the corners are slightly blurry I think.

I'm off to Malaysia in two weeks so I'll get some U/W shots up when I get back

G7.. using WP-DC11.. getting Ikelite housing.. DS51 or DS125???

I am fairly new to photography least to say UW photography. I've taken the WP-DC11 on about 80ish dives. I have this phobia the O-ring will get porous and give way...

I am not good with the strobe previously... Pics look really unnatural..

How do I know which strobe is a good choice with the new Ike housing??

If you are going to get an ike housing, you may as well get the ettl conververter, and that leaves 2 choices for wired TTL: DS-51 and DS-125.

If you are going to shoot in the AV mode (TTL exposure) then the DS51 or DS125 would be the obvious choice. They allow a much easier photo to be taken and keep the coloring and light exposure quality very high.

Blimbo, did you take any test photos by any chance with the longer port and the Inon lens?

My first time using TTL.... usually I shoot in Manual mode and manually white balance. Used AV mode a few times. Guess I have to experiment. Just called the shop and will pick up stuffs tomorrow or next week. yippee!!!

Here we go...

At widest zoom..

and zoomed in 5 positions.. it's only here that the vignetting goes away. Looks pretty bad tho doesn't it, very blurry all round

(and yep my fish tank needs cleaning..)

Hi,

I have got some scratches on the lens of my Canon housing and because of that I am looking into buying the Ikelite housingfor the G7. In the future I would like to do some macro an WA photography. So I am interested in the setup that is used with the foto's taken in this topic (espesially the last ones). What strobes, WA lens and what port (long or short).

Also I would like to know if the photo's are cropped.

Hi Sascha,

Look at my previous post for some test shots with the Ikelite housing + short port & Inon UWL-100. Not had a chance to test underwater yet but am off diving in 2 days so I'll report back :-D

I got a G7 / Ikelite / DS-125

pics are just not as sharp as your pics.

shooting AV mode / f8 / awb / center waited / ttl

did notice after the fact that iso was set for auto, dont know if this matters.

you can see pics at: www.myspace.com/peter_lapin

or http://www.slide.com/r/l-xVBOiE7z-31QxmTS6...p;view=original

Do i need a diffrent lens ?? I'm running standard lens.

thanks

peter

Well, I think I found where the G7 likes to be set! I ended up switching to the following settings which are working fairly well:

TV mode

Macro

ISO 100-200 based on water condition/light etc

Telephoto set to 2.3 to start, I set the hot button to do the telephoto preset which works well to cycle on/off

Shutter Speed 1/250

Exposure -1

AWB

Vivid Mode

Flash +- to O

Center Weighted Average

Safety FE to ON

Spot AE Point to AF Point

Safety Shift to ON

IS Mode to Shoot Only

I also started to shoot in Manual mode to set the Fstop at 8 to increase the DOF which is working well. It would seem that at this point that most of the errors in the photos are based mostly on user incompetence rather than equipment failure. The album at http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/558982663uaDCTJ contains a number of other photos that are taken with the Canon G7 from this week.

Hey Peter. Can you link some photos so they come up on here? Looks like I need a sign in to myspace to see them.

Watch you're strobe placement to help with the backscatter. this is just trial and error until you learn what works best. Maybe try experimenting with different AV settings too, especially in wider angle stuff - lower f stops will let more light in, meaning the camera won't automatically slow the shutter speed down, although will affect your depth of field.

Just my 2c worth, but hope it's some help.
