After flooding my Nikon F100 this weekend I have decided to move on and replace my F100 with digital. This is a long term goal as I am hoping for a possible upgrade to the D200 with mega frames per second or a slight increase in megapixels. The same happened shortly after I bought my D70.

What is the most painfull about my flood is that my 105 macro lense also went swimming, and now I am looking for a new 105.

What are the forums comments on the new nikkor 105 macro lense? I am also going to replace the existing one I have as I am a super macro addict and I know the new 105 cannot fit onto the a teleconverter.

My questions are this;

Can one still buy a new "old" 105 macro lense and where?

What are the comments from members who are using the new 105?

Regards

Check this very informative review on the new 105 by Alex:

And yes, you can still buy a new "old" version 105 (non VR), but I've been using the new version and I think it is worth the price difference.

P.S.: I moved the topic to the SLR area, I think you will get more feedback there.

The 105VR lens is FANTASTIC! I've used the regular 105 and the VR is definitely better for me. It's more expensive, and much bigger, but it's incredibly sharp.

I've never tried supermacro, so I can't advise you how to make that work.

I love the new 105. My old 105 lies unused since I got the VR AF-S. I believe the new lens is sharper. It is my sharpest lens in fact.

Thanks for the possitive on the new 105. In fact I have already ordered mine. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to where I can buy an old 105. Supermacro is still what I like.

Nikon also produces a 1,4 teleconverter which may work if the 105VR fits?

You can do super macro with the new 105 too, you can use Nikon's 5T and 6T close-up diopters, and I am almost sure the 1.4 and 1.7 Nikon converters will work on the 105, although you may loose AF.

I use the new 105 with kenko 1.4x and it works perfectly. Another advantage of the new 105 is that it doesn´t grow when focusing so the port can be very close to the lens and be shorter (I have also made a DIY to use an inon 165 macro lens as a wet lens with success and no vignetting)

I just used the new 105vr lens, new Subal 105vr port, Kenko 2X TC, etc etc and I still maintained use of the manual focus knob with the proper combination of extension rings (figured out with the help of Ryan at ReefPhoto of course). I'll try the lens out next with the Kenko 1.4X TC and the Nikon 6T (with black ring removed and using blu tak to secure on lens to fit in 105vr port). That combination I hear this is a hot combo, again with the new 105vr port you can maintain use of the manual focus knob (although sometimes I preferred to use continuous focus and lock with the AF-L for faster creatures) - auto focus worked with the 2X Kenko TC I tried but it did not work as well as the manual knob and/or the continuous focus-lock combination then you virtually eliminate "hunting" and save a lot of battery life too.

I never used the old 105, but I can say the new 105vr is awesome, sharp and much easier to learn to use than many reports I had read! My 105vr super macro trials came out with an acceptable percentage of success for the first trys and I'm sure my success rate will just improve with experience.

Just my first experiences with with the 105vr and yes it works with all the "super-macro" stuff, at least the Kenko TCs and the Nikon 5T and 6T, Woody's etc.

Best, Carol
