Mr. L.

ikelite vs. canon housing

Recommended Posts

Greetings,

I'm purchasing a Canon 640 to replace my flooded Olympus 8080 and Olympus housing. The question is: What is it about the Ikelite housing, other then its ability to dive deeper than 130 feet, that makes it worth more than twice the cost of Canon's housing? I can literally purchase the camera and Canon housing for less than the Ikelite housing cost alone. Think of the extra $ for the strobe I'll need to replace my trusty old MS since unlike for the 8080, the preflash cannot be turned off on the Canon. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Of course, what I'd really like is a housing for my Sony R1, but Ikelite gave up. :)

Off to St. Croix in July. First visit.

THanks, Leon

Two things that come to mind immediately are the abiltiy to use auxillary lenses and product service/support, Ikelite is known for it's customer service. But yeah it is expensive...

Also I believe there is no preflash when the A640 is in manual mode, but I don't own the camera so I might be wrong.

In manual mode there isn't usually the pre-flash in all Canon's presumer cameras.

Ikelite is much more robust housing and as said by Kerry has great customer service and additional items.

One minus for Ikelite vs. Canon: the housing is much bigger and heavier, you loses the compact package with it.

When I bought a housing for the G7 I chose the Ikelite because I wanted the hotshoe flash setup and the ability to use a TTL strobe flash. Without that requirement I would have chosen the Canon housing.

I have a Sony housing for the N2 and one annoying "artifact" is a dark shadow band that shows up across the bottom 20% of a photo when shooting Macro with a flash. I understand this is from the relative length of the port on the housing compared to the actual exposed length of the lens. I have had some success using the zoom to eliminate some of that shadow.
