dslr learning curve

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Just got all the componants to my DSLR rig (except sync cord) I am using a D70 in an Ike housing with one or two SB 105s. A nikon 60 macro lens and a Sigma 15mm and all nessasary ports arms etc. A coupla questions/ observations from you seasoned DSLR shooters.I have been shooting for years on a Nike 5 but have been shooting a DSLR on land

1- The shutter realease is much quicker using the housing controls than with my finger on the trigger Any way to adjust this or just get used to it ?

2-The viewfinder looks smaller(tinie weenie) with my mask on and looking thru the housing viewfinder. Do you think an extra magnified viewfinder diopter would help?

3- Since the SB 105s will not TTL up with the D70. I am wondering if the auto bracket function will work. (strobe putting out a constant blast and the camera changing f stops ?

Because this is a money pit beond belief I have decided to use my mask with +2 readers and hold off on the suped up prescription mask. If I hold the camera about where I look at my gauges (at med distance I can see a fairly clear image on the screen but I think +3 would be bettor and I am sure UW its gonna be a different story

Any advise or tips would be helpfull

Thanks

It's not adjustable AFAIK, it just takes a while to get used to. Doesn't the D70 have an AF-ON button? Many people use that to focus, then the shutter release only for tripping the shutter.

I don't think it would work. Does your housing not have a magnified viewfinder? My D100 and D200 housings do. I think a diopter in your mask might be a better idea. A bifocal lens at the bottom of the mask lens?

If you are using the strobes at full power, no. The strobes will not cycle fast enough. Also, if you're shooting anything other than still-lifes, your subject is going to move. The best solution is to spend the time to learn about distance vs strobe output. Also, when shooting, shoot your photo, review it, make adjustments, shoot again. You've got a digital camera that will provide you with instant feedback. Use it to your advantage.

Thanks Phil,

I am considering shooting at 1/4 power for faster recycle time and more battery life. I will look at the camera to see about the auto focus on feature. But I dont think it has it. As far as the auto bracket goes. I will give it a try and yes I will have to get used to the strobe to subject distance. But a little insurance wont hurt. Thanks so mush for the advice.

The D70 has the AF-ON button and the Ike housing supports it. The lever is right by your thumb so you can work both the shutter and AF-On at the same time while holding the handle. I don't use it though. I just gently 1/2 press and hold the shutter. I find that easier with fish that never sit still. I think its just something to practice.

Once you get the strobes dialed in for one kind of shot (i.e. top of the reef with a dark background) you can leave it there. You only should have to switch when you switch subject types (i.e rays against a sandy bottom, grouper under a ledge, or silver fish against the surface). I would use my LCD as the meter. Make a test shot with the same distance/background before you approach your subject.

Otherwise, upgrade to DS125s and use TTL. I like it. It works 90% of the time.

I don't think there is anything to improve the viewfinder short of a new housing or camera. The D200 is supposed to have a bigger viewfinder and the boutique housings have optional viewfinders that help but cost as much as the entire Ike housing! The Ike housing has a magnifier already. I have a low-volume black mask that helps.

DSLRs sure are a money pit!! Good luck :)
