Ikelite Dome Port Sealing

Recommended Posts

I went ahead and bought a D80 and the Ikelite housing with dome port arrived from Reefphoto yesterday! After assembly last night I have a question for some of you experienced users. How do I know that the port is sealed? I am used to seeing the compressed oring like the back plate but cannot see the oring at all with the port. The two clips are locked and clicked but again I cannot see that the system is secure. Any suggestions on how you seal and confirm the seal on your Ikelite?

Thanks, sorry for such a newbie question...!

I tell by "feel." Clean the mating surfaces, lube the o-ring and install. Press the dome assembly into the housing towards one of the port locks, push in on the port lock until you hear it click, press down on the housing to seat the opposite side of the port, push in the other port lock and listen for the click. That's it. Once you've done it, you "know" what a sealed dome port "feels" like! If it doesn't feel right, do it again!

Also, if you do not have the camera and lens in the housing, you can see the o-ring from the inside.

Thanks for the help. Put it together right apparently as it didnt leak when I went out today. I was out for about 2 hours and was constantly looking at the bottom of the case for any evidence of water and never saw any.

The most important after the sealing and before going into the water is the soak the equipment in water (pool/bucket/what ever...) and test that every thing is ok, best to try all the controls of the housing & strobe also.

I seemed to have skipped that part! I took the housing with camera straight into the ocean and was checking the housing for any leaks constantly. I am happy to report, no leaks!
