I love macro, when I take pictures at this moment , settings ds125 ttl Nikon D80 50 mm lens iso 100 1/60 f22 my macro s are dark , not normal i think , or m I asking to much from this trobe and should I get a new one ;-( ds200 ???????? help please ???? greetings from Belgium yes I use the diffuser ....... acroporas 0 Posted June 16, 2007 I have both bad and good news for you. First the bad news. Even with a DS-200 you will have to increase the ISO in-order to shoot at F/22. At least to ISO200. And probably ISO400 if you are using the diffuser. (thouh there is no reason to use the diffuser for macro) The good news is that this is not a bad thing. Because even if you had plenty of light, you should not be shooting at F/22 on a D80. At any aperature smaller than about F/10, diffraction is going to cause your image to be blurry. You can probably push it to F/14 or so before it gets too horible, but by f/22 it is going to be quite noticable. scorpio_fish 5 Posted June 17, 2007 I disagree. I've shot plenty of macro with DS125 at ISO 100 at f/22. If I was really close, I would have to stop down to f/25 or f/29. In the old days of film I would shoot f/22 with with two SS200's, shooting ISO50. Never had to even use full power. Show us some shots. Either, something isn't working right or you are not shooting macro, i.e. you are more than .6 meters from your subject. IF you are 1 meter away shooting a 300-500 centimeter fish, then f/22 won't work. But then again, you wouldn't need f/22 anyway. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

acroporas 0 Posted June 17, 2007 With two DS-125 strobes, I can almost get F/22 at ISO 100 (it is still a bit underexposed). But canon lies about it's ISO. Canon ISO 100 is actually ISO 160. Nikon on the other hand is accurate with it's ISO ratings, so a nikon would need to use ISO 200 and two DS-125 strobes to get F/22. Though don't forget what I said in my first post about diffraction. You would not want to shoot at F/22 on a D-80 anyway as diffraction is quite bad. By bad, I mean that it will cut your resolution in half. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
davichin 18 Posted June 18, 2007 Are you using the strobe with the right preflash configuration? You may be using the strobe in no-preflash mode so it dumps its full charge on the preflash not having enough power for the real flash.... Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

kriptap 0 Posted June 18, 2007 (edited) I think a few more questions are needed, with those settings you state above: 1 How far away from the subject are you? 2 How have you placed the strobe, is it close to the lens or on an arm sum distance away? I just got back from a 3-day and I shot my 125's on macro all the way up to f45 with no problems. TTL might behave differently though. I shoot manually.
