I have just placed my order for a Seacam housing for the d200

The latest info I had from Seacam usa was that testing was being done to confirm the best Port/extension configuration

A custom Zoom gear has been made and shipped and feeling was the pvl 35 with the dome would be the ticket..but I stress testing has not yet confirmed this...

HI.

which dome port??? Could it be the same combination as the Nikon 12/24

which is the wide port with the 35mm extension.

Unlikely since Sea & Sea housing users have found that they need the narrow extension tube rather than the deeper one that works with the large dome port and 12-24. The Tokina 10-17 is longer than the Nikkor 10.5 but a lot shorter than the Nikkor 12-24. It is reasonable to assume that the 18-35 lens gear of the Seacam will work since the 18-35 lens gear of the Sea & Sea works in that housing. I have used the 10-17 exclusively on my last three trips.

Mike Mesgleski (http://www.underwatercamerarepair.com) sent me an e-mail over the weekend reporting he was just home from Turks and Caicos, diving with Tokina 10-17mm, Seacam D200. He used the fisheye port with no port extension and said it was spot on. Very clean in corners. Makes sense actually as fisheye port and superdome are very well optimized for the 10.5 and 16mm Nikkors.

I suspect superdome and fisheye port are the right choices for this lens, but more testing will have to be done to know what (if any) port extension is required with superdome.

Harald from Seacam told me to use the lens without an extension ring. I will test my 10-17 this weekend. I am using the Seacam gear that is made for this lens.

I will use the superdome for the test since my fisheye dome is attacked by a trigger fish :(

I used my 10.5 without any extension ring but then bought a 10-17. I used it for one trip in the same way but afterwards thought sharpness across the frame was suspect. The addition of a narrow extension ring made all the difference.

So, yes, it will work, and no, it will not work as well as it can! (Good enough for internet but not for printed DPS.)

(I don't have a Seacam housing but surely the same rules apply? If the dome is right for the 10.5 you will need to push it forward a bit to optically accommodate the longer 10-17.)

Definitive test results at http://wetpixel.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=19621

short story:

Fisheye port - Very little difference between port alone and port with PVL20. But, slight vignetting with PVL20, so recommend when using Fisheye port no PVL.

Superdome - Significant improvement using Superdome + PVL20 with Tokina 10-17.

To answer original question SD + PVL20 is the very best in-water optical performace for this particular lens and Seacam housing.

Thanks for the information. I will order the PLV20 ASAP and I will use my Fisheye dome tomorrow for my first tests
