kazb 0 Posted July 2, 2007 A friend of mine got a Olympus 330 slr with the original Olympus housing ( got it before he heard of Ikelite ) Now he wants to add a flash ( or 2 ). The range of flashes Olympus offer are not that great. Is is possible to connect a fx. Sea & Sea YS110 directly to the housing or what should he be looking at ? He says that the housing got a 5 pin connector. Kenneth
Phil Rudin 445 Posted July 2, 2007 (edited) Hi Kenneth, The Olympus 5 pin connector is made for TTL with Olympus land strobes in housings. As you pointed out this is not the best solution for U/W photography. If you want to use TTL you will need a TTL conterter like the ones offered by Athena-opt.com. I use this converter with the Pt-E02 housing and Inon Z220 strobes with great results. Several strobes from Inon and Sea & Sea can be used with the Athena Converter. You will also find a large number of after market items that can be used with all the Olympus DSLR housings. jlyle 8 Posted July 2, 2007 If your friend shoots manually, he can use the Ikelite strobes with a manual slave controller, but must fool the camera into thinking the flash is deployed. RogerC has done this by using a piece of toothpick to keep the flash from fully popping up, but open enough to fit in the housing and flash for the EV controller to pick up. bruceterrill 0 Posted July 4, 2007 Hi Guys, I notice, with a lot of interest, that Olympus has released an U/W strobe just for us good folks. The info can be found in UwPmag issue 37, and it looks suspiciously like an older S&S style? I haven't checked the spec's but it is certainly the Olympus answer for TTL shooting. Don't remember seeing any prices though... HTH, Bruce
kazb 0 Posted July 4, 2007 The olympus flash is expensive and its only got a guide number of 14 as far as I remember Kenneth
