scubamarli 5 Posted July 9, 2007 The housing's packed and time is running out....I'm thinking of trying my 60mm micro with the Kenko 2x tele, and wondered if anyone else is using this combo. What port extensions are you using? Will the focus gear line up? Cheers, Marli
randapex 0 Posted July 9, 2007 Hi Marli, The one time I tried my 2x on the 60mm, the working distance, racked all the way out, was waaaaay too short. With the correct extension ring on my Subal port, the focus gear lines up. I did some testing a while back and found that if you cheat back just a little with the focus, you're almost at 1-1 anyway so, I'd say rack it out all the way and leave it for the dive or just shoot the 60 without the TC. cor 0 Posted July 9, 2007 For about a year or so this was my favorite combination. I prefered it over the 105 because it can do basically everything the 105 does, but if you really want to you can get closer and go beyond 1:1. If your objective is to do smaller than 1:1, then id look at the 105 + 1.4x, or else 105+2x. If all you have is 60+2x, i wouldnt rule it out. With practice you can get worthwhile images with it, but like rand says, its not easy due to the very very small working distance. Cor
scubamarli 5 Posted July 9, 2007 Thanks, guys, I wondered about the working distance being too short, but frankly, I like being really close to the subject when trying teensy stuff. Then again, I don't want to bonk into anything. I just find the 105 and 2X set up just so huge and heavy, although I have some StiX to try now that may help. I probably don't have a proper port extension to use the 105 and 1.5X converter, as the Aquatica housing is shorter than my old film one, and I already had to add an extra extension to fit the 105 on its own. So far, I've liked using the 105 and 4X dioptre, but have not been able to find a Nikon 4T, so only have a cheapo close up lens that fits the 105mm. I absolutely refuse to spend another dime until some cheques roll in....soon. Cheers, Marli
Claude 0 Posted July 16, 2007 I'm using the 60mm with a Kenko MC7 2x converter with the same port as for the Nikon AFD 105mm (with the Kenko Pro it doesn't fit). It works fine and I love that lens combination - pictures are very sharp... and I don't really have lighting problems even when I'm very close for 2:1 pictures! Islandbound 1 Posted July 16, 2007 Claude, would you be willing to post an your closest 2:1 photo thats uncropped in any way? I am also considering this 60mm/2x setup and have never seen an uncropped example of how much of a closeup can actually be taken. As for the lighting issues, do you use 2 strobes or one? Often I only use one as 2 strobes have an awful lot of drag. When I freedive deep sometimes that begins to affect me a bit.
Claude 0 Posted July 16, 2007 (edited) For sure : as you're very close from the subject, you need 2 strobes ! Attached a picture with 2 uncropped parts : center and border. I took that picture at f22... at 2:1, the DOF is not very large! Edited July 16, 2007 by Claude
scubamarli 5 Posted July 16, 2007 I found that if I stacked the 105VR port extension (which is the old 105 micro with prior Nikon housings) with my extension for the Sigma 10-20, the Kenko Pro 2X tele fits with the 60mm. I didn't check to see if the focus gear lines up, as everything's packed for the Solomons, and I'm too lazy to take it all out. It shall wait to be seen if it works.
