bursprak 0 Posted August 2, 2007 I just started shooting RAW with my 400D setup...to compensate for the beginner mistakes But I have a problem when I'm going to put them on my comp. When I plugin the camera in my comp the program can't find the RAW files... Theres just to similar looking .jpeg files with the same size... I've tried both Adobe bridge and windows explorer but the same problem keep occuring... The camera seems fine... I'm shooting large jpegs + RAW and it fills up the card fast... Anybody experienced the same problem or have a solution to it? I'm using a PC with XP Pro on it by the way... Would become very happy if somebody could help me
james 0 Posted August 2, 2007 Hi, You might have to install a camera driver on your computer. Your camera came with a CD with some software on it - check there. Just a guess. I don't connect my camera to the computer, I usually take the card out and use a card reader. Cheers James
bmemike 0 Posted August 2, 2007 And out of curiosity, what happens if you just shoot RAW (no JPEGs) - does the software see the RAW files then or does it find no files?
K9Shadow 9 Posted August 3, 2007 I have a Rebel XT (350D) and I have done some RAW shooting with it. I use a card reader to transfer the files and view/ manipulate them with with Digital Photo Professional which comes on the Canon driver disk. I have heard that the Canon .CR2 RAW files are not recognized by all the different software. I think there is a plug-in required for Photoshop. Give that a try and see what happens. K9Shadow 9 Posted August 3, 2007 I've tried both Adobe bridge and windows explorer but the same problem keep occuring... I was reading your oringinal post again. You must view the RAW images with a program that can work with them. Windows explorer will not display RAW images until you do whatever postprocessing you want and process the RAW file. Sorry for not getting it all in one reply.
pakman 0 Posted August 3, 2007 That's strange. While explorer won't be able to open the RAW files, the RAW files should show. Not sure which version of photoshop you are using, but have you updated the RAW converter to the latest? Since you see the jpg's, I presume the connection with the camera is fine. Have you tried using the Canon ZoomBrowser EX that came with the camera? Can you try shooting just in RAW and then see if the files show up.
Cerianthus 55 Posted August 3, 2007 I have another EOS model, and never invested in a decent cardreader. So I hook up the camera to the computer. Although I have installed all drivers, I always have trouble downloading the RAW’s as well. So I just stick to using the EOS viewer (one of the programs on the disk) for this. bursprak 0 Posted August 3, 2007 And out of curiosity, what happens if you just shoot RAW (no JPEGs) - does the software see the RAW files then or does it find no files? Thanks guys for all the answers... Tried that and now does the .cr2 file show... It's kind of handy to use the .jpeg + RAW setting for reviewing Seems like there's a bug in the camera software or somehing like that... Is there maybe a firmware update for the camera? I purchased mine in early april 2007... I attached a screendump so you can see what my screen shows...
bmemike 0 Posted August 3, 2007 Very strange. I also copy my images with a card reader and never installed the camera software (Canon 30D). So I don't think I can specifically help you with this exact problem with the software. But maybe observing the following may help: 1) When you shoot RAW+JPEG and you copy all the JPEGs over to the computer, is the memory card completely empty in the camera or does it appear to have "some photos" left on it? This may be all those RAW files if the software just isn't copying them over (though doubtful since some got copied over very recently but not all the old ones). 2) Double-check the software to see if it may be copying the RAW files to a different location than the JPEGs. I'm not sure why it'd be doing this, but it's probably worth a look just to be sure. (Or just do a search on your computer for .CR2 files if you don't have many on there in the first place) 3) If you do have a card reader, shoot RAW+JPEG and ensure that you're seeing both on the card before you try using the software - just to make sure that both file types are being captured and saved in RAW+JPEG mode. I would hate to think that it's not, but it's probably worth a minute to check. My mind is officially boggled by all this. One more reason to just use a memory card reader
vannar 0 Posted August 5, 2007 The reason for this confusion is that the computer recognizes the camera as a "digital camera" and not as a digita storage (CF card), there a a couple of diferent protocols that are used. I think that there is a setting in the camera that enables you to change this setting, but I havent bothered changing it since I use the a cardreader. markdhanlon 0 Posted August 7, 2007 I only shoot in raw and use the canon software to download. Then once they are downloaded, I use Adobe Bridge CS3 to view, manipulate, etc. I used to use CS2 and I needed to download an update for it before it would view the canon raw files. This could be the issue.

Would become very happy if somebody could help me I had a few problems when I first changed from a 350D to a 400D. The EOS utilitiy for both versions would conflict and the old version wouldn't download the 400 correctly. I removed both versions and just reloaded the new version. I also had to set Adobe Photoshop elements not to download. Now the download window opens when I connect the camera to the computer. It will place a copy of both JPG & CR2 file in the \pictures\year_month_day folder. I also had to download a new plugin for adobe because the orriginal version won't open a CR2 from the 400D. Everything now works fine. Edited August 21, 2007 by nopro
