Dive Site Books for the Pacific NW

Recommended Posts

I travel out to the Victoria area a couple of times a year to go diving/sailing. I have my own boat (38' catamaran with tender), all my own gear, tanks, compressor, etc. but don't know the areas dive sites as well as most locals.

I do own one dive site book: Diver's Guide, Vancouver Island South by Greg Dombowsky. It's a great book and I'm looking for others like it. If anyone knows of other books that they use to show them local dive sites in the Pacific NW, I would greatly appreciate it.

The bible for WA State is NW Shore Dives by Fischmiller. There are a couple of out of print books on boat diving, but that won't help. For Canada the old standards are Betty Pratt-Johnson's 99 Dives and 101 Dives, but they are pretty dated as to local facilities, etc. But sites don't move.

Go pick Erin's brain at Ogden Pt Dive Centre, he's a nice guy. Good dive out the back of the shop on the breakwater too! West Race Rocks is an awesome dive, maybe the best wall in the southern Vancouver Isd, IMHO.

I am in the middle of writing and photographing a new scuba diving section for WA State Tourism's Experience WA site, we are starting with shore dives, a couple are up now, here's one on Titlow Beach. It should be much more finished within the month, check back.

I keep my 28' sailboat in Blaine, WA on the border, let me know if you'd like to meet up sometime.

Hope that helps,

Jack

Based on you having a boat I am sure you are well versed in reading the tides as they are crucial to ensuring you have a more pleasurable dive. I agree with what Jack says. I would consult the local shop as they are helpful and the Breakwater is a must do dive, no boat needed.

Cheers

Todd

Thanks guys. I've tried to pick up copies of Betty Pratt-Johnson's books, but they seem to be out of print and impossible to get your hands on. My boats based in Sydney, but I should pop on down to see Erin.

Jack, the next couple of times that we're going to be out there, it'll be short sailing trips, but we'll pm you when we get some extended time to go diving out there.

Betty was traveling around Puget Sound updating her info on dive sites a year or 2 ago, and in the last several months some pre-press review text has been circulated to some of the people she has been working with. I think I heard that she was combining her books, but my memory is a bit fuzzy on that. I haven't heard status updates lately, but keep your eyes our for a new edition in the near future.
