Islandbound 1 Posted August 25, 2007 I dont think its a nudi because the "rhinopores" dont look right to me. Found it yesterday about 4 or 5 meters down.
Leslie 0 Posted August 25, 2007 Flatworns have a single body layer. This one has a mantle and a foot in addition to the rhinophores so it's some kind of branch. The way the body is organized reminds me of an arminid but I'm not sure if the tips of the rhinophores are right - they look more like they belong to an opisthobranch. Do you have another pic? Time to hit the books.
bella 0 Posted August 25, 2007 I dont think its a nudi because the "rhinopores" dont look right to me. Found it yesterday about 4 or 5 meters down. img It looks like a color variation of a Berthella martensi pleurobranch: http://www.seaslugforum.net/factsheet.cfm?base=bertmart
Leslie 0 Posted August 25, 2007 I was just coming back to post the same SSF link that Bella did. B. martensi can shed parts of its mantle to get away from predators & it looks as if yours has lost the rear side portion.
Islandbound 1 Posted August 25, 2007 So... a pleurobranch is NOT a nudibranch, its a sea slug?
scubamarli 5 Posted August 26, 2007 They aren't nudibranchs, but side gilled slugs, from the Order Notospidea. They're cute, anyway. Marli
