Has anyone ever flooded a YS 110?

Recommended Posts

Trying to decide what to do about replacing my waterlogged DS51 if it cant be replaced with a YS110 to match the other YS110 I have. I see that Ikelite has a dual cord to trigger the strobes in manual mode and this would be fine for me. So far the YS 110 I have has not flooded itself but I was just wondering if anyone else has had any long term experience with this strobe and the "twist-lock" sealing method of the battery compartment.

I have a YS 120 .. have flooded it at least once.

the 120 has a sealed battery compartment so all I had to do was rinse it out, then rinsed with white vinegar and rinsed again .. still working fine.

I am guessing the 110 is sealed like the rest of the S&S range, it makes them kinda fool proof.

On the twist to lock of the S&S strobes .. I take care of them less than any other O-Ring and they all but that one time have never let me down, and then it was probably my fault. (owned it for 6 years now)

If you are interested in the YS110 for their optical cable slave TTL mode, you should know that most of them do not work, in that mode, with most cameras.

I got a 110, but traded it in, still dry, for a DS51 and heinrichs DA2, which are working great.

I have a YS-110 which I use as a second strobe being fired via optic cable by the now-flooded DS51. I was considering replacing the DS51 altogether with another YS110 ( they are about $490 US here in Japan) and then using a cable from the Ikelite housing to trigger both the YS 110s.

I'm sorry to detract from the thread, but I am curious as to how well the YS110 works slaving from the DS51. Are you using the DS51 in TTL mode from the Ike housing? If so, have you decided how you would connect the dual YS110 to the housing and preserve TTL?

Thanks! Apologies to the OP for the tangent.

Back to the original question, my buddy took two brand new 110's to Bali in May this year. He has used Sea and Sea for years and is fully familiar with the door closure system. One flooded via the battery door - we cleaned the battery compartment up, changed the o-ring in case, took extra care shutting it and it flooded again! The second one got water into the electronics by some other route after 5 dives and just packed up. This latter one has been replaced by Sea and Sea after a long delay. The first one they said was his fault which is total bollocks but he ended up paying. I wouldn't have but he needed a strobe to use.
