Best Way to Transfer Images from PC to MacBook Pro?

Hi all,

 

I just bought a MacBook Pro this weekend. All of my images currently reside on my ancient and slow desktop PC. What is the best way to transfer the images to the new laptop?

 

I was using Capture NX to work on my raw images on the desktop PC, but it's been painfully slow at rendering the images and making adjustments to them.

 

I just loaded Capture NX on my MacBook Pro but there are no images to work with

 

I do have a FlashTrax XT loaded with images from my recent trip to Cozumel and was wondering if I can transfer them to the MacBook Pro directly from the FlashTrax?

 

Any suggestions from those more experienced than I in working with a Mac?

Would you believe that site about connecting through a network was blocked by the filter here at work?? I'll have to check it out at home.

 

I haven't tried connecting the FlashTrax XT yet to the MacBook Pro. Will try it when I'm at home.

 

How about the rest of the images on my PC if network option doesn't work for me?

The bad thing about my old desktop PC is that the USB is not the fast 2.0 connection, but rather the old slow USB. When I transferred images from the FlashTrax XT to the PC, it seemed like it took forever

Setting up a basic network is really the best option since you'll be able to xfer everything in one go and just walk away as the files get copied.

 

If that doesn't work, you have to resort to more "manual" options. Some that come to mind:

 

- Burn to CD/DVD and copy to new machine (ick!)

- Copy to USB thumbdrive (biggest you can find) and copy to new machine (considerably less ick)

 

Everything else is basically a variation on that same theme - copying the files to some portable memory device and connecting it to the new machine afterwards. It's all going to be a pain in the butt depending on how much space that third device has (I have a 4Gig USB thumbdrive, which wouldn't be "bad", but still not fun for people with huge photo collections).

 

I definitely recommend the network option though.

You will like this. Now that you have a mac it will boot in target disk mode. In other words you can make your macbook read like a firewire (1394) disk drive to your pc. All you do is shut down your macbook then press and hold the T key while it is starting up. Note press and hold T before immediately after pressing the power button. Once you see the firewire symbol come up on your macbook plug it into the firewire port on you pc. The only thing is if your pc computer doesn't have a firewire 1394 port. If it doesn't than you can buy a firewire pci card for 20-30 bucks (or borrow one from another computer).

 

It is much easier than setting up a mac to pc network and has a similar transfer rate.
