Nikon Capture Nx

Recommended Posts

Hey guys

I've just had an e-flyer from Nikon about the upgrade to Nikon Capture NX. The Nikon blurb says v1.2 runs faster. I'd always read that 1.0 was very slow.

Does anyone have any experience of the upgrade? Is it faster? I'm currently using RawShooter Pro - which was bought out by Adobe and changed to Lightroom (which I can't say I like too much). I was mulling over switching to Capture.

Any thoughts guys?

I just saw a demo of NX at our local camera club a few weeks ago; it seemed pretty fast on a Mac. The u-point technology was really cool. Should be very nice for underwater photo editing. I just could not justify another piece of software when I already have CS3 and Aperture.

I'm using NX 1.2 and I'm very happy with it. I didn't use 1.0 or 1.1 so I can't comment on the speed. I can tell you it uses a lot of memory (300-700MB with only one image loaded) but if you have 2GB in your PC, you should be fine.

Hey Guys

Well I handed over my money - and am delighted to say that NX works like a charm on my VAIO laptop with 1GB RAM. I seems pretty quick to me - and, as Loftus says, the U-point technology is terrific

I have used all the versions of NX from 1.0 to 1.3 and like how it evolved.

1.0 crashed often and was slow to work with. But the features it offered made me tolerate the bugs in the program.

1.1 was a considerable improvement in the speed and bugs department. With that one I switched most of my editing from Photoshop to NX.

1.2 and 1.3 is mainly a question of adding more NEF files to the range it will process. The functionality had a few minor upgrades and it seems they got the last bugs chased out of the program. Since I got the 1.3 version I haven't seen any unwanted features.

It's fast and it works really well. And you just gotta love that U-point technology.

Now I only use Photoshop for making pictures ready for the web and putting copyright notice on them.

I'm using Capture NX. When I used it on my older PC it was painfully slow at rendering images. I bought a MacBook Pro and it seems to render images quickly.

I'm currently learning the software by studying Jason Odell's eBook. It costs only $30 and is an excellent resource. It's much better than the manual provided with the software.

I'm also attending a Nikonians workshop on Capture NX in Seattle on December 15th which will hopefully make me more adept at using the program.

For Nikon camera users, Capture NX is the way to go for raw images.

Hope that helps,

Ellen

Hello Christensen,

the same here... :)

there must be a less powerful software for putting copyright notice on photos. Do you guys know of any such software?

I don't use Photoshop (never have and can't just paying the obscene price they want). I use PaintShopPro 9 instead. Much cheaper and does everything I need.

I use CaptureNX for the basic raw conversion, including raw type adjustments such as white balance and exposure. I then use PSP9 for everything else. I don't like the cropping in CaptureNX as it doesn't tell you the size of crop. I don't like the USM but that's more so because I don't use it often.
