Dry Dive on New Housing

Recommended Posts

Proud new owner of Ike setup for ND80... Local lake dive site just went off limits due to drought conditions and work on the Dam. Naturally this was right before I could "dry dive" the housing and strobe setup. I have access to a pool at 12' in depth. Question is... can I have confidence in the setup if I only check it out in the pool environment. Locally there are two schools of thought on this (shallow will uncover any issues or must have depth/pressure to uncover any issues). Heading out for a Florida trip in a couple of weeks and would like to verify as much as possible before the trip so I can maximize my dives while on the trip. Any input would be appreciated

I would be interested to get some info regarding this as well. I jsut got a set up myself for my 20D. I live in Hawaii but im visiting the fam in Wisconsin right now. I will need to test my gear once I get there and was planning on doing so in the pools at the marine park where I use to work. The problem is the max depth is only about 18 feet. Im glad you posted this question.

Sorry this reply wasnt much help, haha, but hopefully someone can give us some input.

While I think a pool dive can uncover immediate issues, I have seen orings that weep but only after 45 mins at 60' or so. Personally, I usually don't take a camera on my first dive just to check my weighting and so forth anyway. So taking a housing down without a strobe for one dive shouldn't be an issue.

In my opinion, a pool may reveal different issues that could be revealed in a deeper depth. That's why whenever I have a modification made to my housing (and when it was new), I take it both to the pool and on a dive empty. Just make sure that you account for the extra buoyancy on the dive caused by an empty housing.

I generally take a housing for a quick dive without the camera, especially if the o-rings have been replaced. Most manufacturers suggest testing the housing at a greater depth -- say ten meters or so for about an hour.

I have never experienced a problem doing this in a decade . . .
