dmoss 0 Posted October 30, 2007 (edited) Excuse me if this has already been posted, but I couldn't find it. Found this on the-digital-picture.com with the message posted: "In an apparently legit PDF letter floating around the web, Canon UK outlines what is essentially a recall of the Canon EOS 1D Mark III. I expect we will see additional, more official (or at least more public) news regarding this solution in the coming days or weeks." Canon Letter to Dealers Might help someone considering this one as a near term purchase. Edited October 30, 2007 by dmoss

Alex_Mustard 0 Posted October 30, 2007 [EDIT - sorry - posted at the same time as William] Is this official? I had seen it, but presumed it was a fake circulated on those forums by Canon-bashers? Has this been confirmed as official? I'd be surprised. I am very skeptical of announcements like this - that come from the photo-forums without seeing official announcements on the frontpages of sites like robgalbraith.com and dpreview.com. dmoss 0 Posted October 30, 2007 (edited) I had read the Rob Galbraith site and am skeptical as well about the fake circulations that always seem to pop up on the web. I hadn't seen this 'apparently legit PDF letter' yet and thought it interesting. Normally the fake information has to do with new camera releases and specs way ahead of actual release. Edit... I just read Rob Galbraith's site again and he has an update posted yesterday with a copy of the same letter. Edited October 30, 2007 by dmoss

echeng 0 Posted October 31, 2007 I was told that Canon will be recalling the cameras from consumers, too, for a hardware fix. I have a 1D Mk III, and Canon said that mine might have shipped with the fix installed already. "Might". They'll have serial numbers posted shortly, I'm sure. Paul Kay 62 Posted October 31, 2007 It looks very much as though this issue was thoroughly explored on the robgalbraith.com website and although I'm not certain of this, I'd strongly suspect that the highlighting of the potential problem and subsequent feedback to Canon from the site may have had a substantial impact on the subsequent train of events leading to the recall (which seems to be for a small part of the mirror mechanism to be replaced from what I can make out). Which goes to show just how powerful a well respected website can be! I'm assuming that the 1DSMkIII will have any required 'fix' installed before release!? dmoss 0 Posted November 1, 2007 They'll have serial numbers posted shortly, I'm sure. Looks like s/n 501001 - 546561 (as Eric & others frantically flip their cameras over searching) Rob Galbraith Update
echeng 0 Posted November 1, 2007 DAMMIT! Mine is in range, but it was shipped in mid-Oct by Ritz Camera. Furthermore, it has firmware 1.1.0, which the Rob Galbraith update says new (fixed) cameras ship with. I guess I will try to return it, and if that doesn't work, I'll just send it in when they start accepting them.
Rud-gr 0 Posted November 4, 2007 DAMMIT! Mine is in range, So is mine, funny thing is that I experienced these focussing problems mostly at very low temperatures (snowboarding photography). Extremely annoying though even though the rest of the camera is a dream come true. Let's just hope Canon will address this issue better than they did with the MKII-issues. dmoss 0 Posted November 19, 2007 Looks like some (3,450) of the cameras with serial numbers within the initial range that Canon announced "do in fact have a properly functioning sub-mirror mechanism." Rob Galbraith Update
