Sepia 0 Posted April 7, 2003 Hello, I am thinking of purchasing an Ikelite DS-125 strobe for my Olympus PT-010 housing and C4000Z camera. The hardest decision is what tray to use!! The easiest option to go with would be the Ikelite tray which comes in a package with the DS-125, however I have heard that there is a problem with the housing turning on this tray. Has anyone found that to be a major issue? Cheers, Emily
ikelite 0 Posted April 7, 2003 The correct tray will have stops that contact the feet on bottom of camera housing to prevent rotation. Housing can be opened without removing from the tray. A similar looking tray for use with the Auto_35 system does not have the stops and would allow rotation if used with Canon, Sony or Olympus housings.
Rick 0 Posted April 7, 2003 In October I purchased an Ikelite DS-125 strobe kit (#3973.65) which was listed on their website for the PT-010 case. So, I assume that I got the correct tray for my case. The tray does have stops that contact the feet on bottom of camera housing - unfortunately, they don't stop the rotation completely. On another thread someone suggested using a rubber fender washer. I'll try that on my next dive trip in May. I personally find the rotation to be an annoyance
Simon K. 0 Posted April 7, 2003 I Use the Tray with a WP-DC300 and know the problem. The Housing does not "rotate" - that is prevented by the stop (BTW You can't open the Canon housing while mounted on the tray). But the Housing is difficult to srew real tight to the try, and it seems it gets less tight after you are underwater and the housing moves around the axis of the screw. You can fix it by retightening it under water (but it becomes lose againafter some handling). It is a real annoyance. I'm going to experiment a little. I'm thinking to use a rubber ring like you find at the ceramic "cork" on old-fashiond beer bottles (they are pretty hip here in Germany) between the tray and the housing around the screw or put something through two of the holes on the tray where the plastic brackets of the housing are, to prevent side movement.. ikelite 0 Posted April 7, 2003 Rotation or becoming loose would very aggrevating. E-mail me (ike@ikelite.com) a mailing address and I will send a piece of the thin rubber pad that can be placed on the tray.
Rick 0 Posted April 8, 2003 Ike Thanks for offering to send a rubber pad - hopefully that will resolve the rotation/becoming loose problem. Other than this minor issue I have been really pleased with the strobe, tray, and ttl sensor. Now I am considering a second strobe (DS-125), but was informed by your tech support people that your double handle tray does not fit the PT-010 or PT-015 case. To bad - I would have liked the flexibility of using either the single or double handle tray with the same quick disconnect arm attachments.
Peter Schulz 1 Posted April 9, 2003 FYI the Ikelite dual strobe tray works great with the PT015 IF you have the slot in the tray opened up to 1"wide. I had a machine shop do this for me for $25.00. After I had the slot put in, I mounted the housing in the center of the tray so that the housing door can be opened without interfering with the right tray handle. Having done this I was concerned that I would not be able to hold the tray by the right handle and still reach the shutter lever on the camera. In fact I can't reach it. But I can hold the housing with my right hand and comfortably operate the camera. Bottom line: I'm very satsisfied with the setup.
ikelite 0 Posted April 9, 2003 I sent rubber pads to Rick. Peter schulz is way ahead of us on dual handle assembly. Will cogitate on this.
Peter Schulz 1 Posted April 10, 2003 Ike, if you consider putting a slot in the dual handled tray, I think the right width is probably 15/16", not the 1" that I have in mine. Bottom line: Measure twice, cut once.
