Nick Hope 151 Posted November 15, 2007 What happened to the Z2, Z3, Z4, Z5 and Z6? This is actually quite a leap from the Z1... - Native 24P - Interchangeable lenses (could even use a macro SLR lens by the sound of it) - 36mins of HDV recording direct to an 8Gb compact flash card at the same time as tape using that extra module - 1.5 lux - HDMI out I would only buy one if the housing manufacturers left room for the compact flash card module. I can't wait to get away from tape. Tape would then be my backup in case the card failed. Now trying to get my head around how this all stacks up against the PMW-EX1
Drew 0 Posted November 15, 2007 The good news is that the Z7 lanc based unlike the EX1 which means more housing choices. Even better news is my 16GB CF card can be used in the MRC1. Note 1.5lux is at 1/24 in 24P. If anyone has shot any action at 1/24 will know to shoot at 1/48 minimum except for static shots. I'd say probably around 2.5-3 lux in useable range. Sony US and Canada are already demoing the Z7 and the bigger brother. I think 2008 will be a busy year for HD cameras, and it won't be all Sony.

Scuba_SI 39 Posted November 16, 2007 You'll get a trail behind the moving stuff, looks very artistic! Get one of your office girls to jump around and film her doing it at 1/20th.

I've seen that effect at slower than 1/50 at 50i, but between 1/24 and 1/48 at 24P wouldn't do that would it? I understand that the individual frames would be blurry but the video? Obviously it won't be as "film like".
Drew 0 Posted November 16, 2007 1/48 is standard for a reason nick. Use your CF24 at 1/24 and 1/48 and look at the difference in motion blur.
Steve Douglas 16 Posted November 16, 2007 The thing is, will and when manufacturers make the housings for it. Gates is usually pretty quick to do so but you pay the price. Other companies seem to be focusing on the low end market. A drag. Steve B)
Drew 0 Posted November 18, 2007 I would say the lanc housing producers would more likely do this camera than the completely mechanical EX1. This camera is aimed at the Canon XLH1 directly. For a portable, long lense wildlife camera, these interchangeable lens cameras are fantastic. The Canon has the advantage of being able to use their EOS lenses for even more reach. I'm seen guys use the 600mmL for 4200mm equivalent. Hopefully someone makes an adapter for use with PL and EOS lenses for the Z7. It'd be a pity to be stuck with what Sony offers on their A series. DeanB 19 Posted January 17, 2008 Hi all, I'm now totally confused...(add your jokes here) My relief at deciding to order the EX1 has now been knocked a bit by reading up on the Z7...i always wished that Sony would listen to me and bring out a Z1 with interchangable lenses and when they finally did i go and let them down by ordering a Ex1...O.k the Ex1 is a better Cam in lots of ways but the ability to change lenses not just Sony products but Canon, Zeiss, nikon ..ENG's and Cinema lenses...must be fantastic for topside wildlife... and i don't even know what ENG means !!!! But its HDV where the EX1 is HD...o,k not pure HD...but 1920 lines styley HD better so nicer pics and more broadcastable...and the Ex1 has the fujinon lens 14x (439.6) equiv...so by a 1.7 converter..you do the math...still a great field cam...But imagine the Z7 with a whopper of a tele on it..I'd never leave home and still catch the wilderbeast migrations in Africa.. Low light (I know its different wherever you go) on the Z7 is said to be 1.5lux where the Ex1 i think was around .45 or something like that...and to carry all those spare lenses would be a excess baggage nightmare but i'm warming to the Z7..I love the thought of the versitility of interchangable lenses...and also you can record on the compact flash card then transfer in cam to tape for archive and carry on no stopping..wow... Housings ...thats another story...Z7 has LANC.. EX1 dosen't.... Why me oh lord why me... what would be a better option for me..I have to make that decision..but i'm crap and confused....and in need of a beer... Dive safe Dean(arrrggghhhh!!!!)B Cheers MOD... seeesharky 3 Posted January 18, 2008 Hi Cliff Thanks for starting this thread. I have had my eyes fixed on getting a Z 1U for so long untill I found this. My goshh!!! What an impressive looking machine. I have been a bit concerned about switching entirely to recording onto a hard drive, especially when travelling with regards to excessive weight. A mini DV is light and easy to carry around and if looked after will last a long time. But having both options and a Lanc and interchangable lenses is really exciting news. Do you think if gates made a housing you would have several choices of lenses that would fit into the housing too? The lens quality would have to be so much better. But every time you changed a lens would you have to change a dome port lens? This is where things could start to get too pricey and would be the deciding factor on going with this camera. I look forward to finding out what the housing options will be. Has anyone found a price for it yet? Cheers J
Drew 0 Posted January 18, 2008 I believe B&H has it listed at $6300 right now for preorders. I'm not sure on what implementation any housing manufacturer will take but catering for the standard lens behind a dome port and also the WA lens should be standard. It's a great topside B camera for broadcasters and a cheaper interchangeable lens A cam for the smaller production companies. The most impressive feature I think is the ability to record to flash cards simultaneously. I hope housing manufacturers allow space for the MRC1 in the housings as it's a great backup and even replacement for tape!
DeanB 19 Posted January 19, 2008 Hi all, Just change my order from the EX1 to the Z7...its a beast of a cam with loads of potential....it wasn't that far off the EX1 in terms of quality although this was in the shop...the EX1 did look impressive and i loved the macro mode on it...But the Z7 pipped it for me with the lens change ability and CF to tape workflow...and of course lanc..Although the EX1 has this connection on the Fujinon lens which the salesman told me will alow access to all controls once fitted, so this is a plus for housings...the Lowlight isn't as good as the EX1 obviously but its better than the Z1... Hopefully receiving it mid Feb... Dive safe DeanB
peacedog 0 Posted January 19, 2008 Anyone from Light & Motion wanna chime in a few thoughts? If it's time to start socking money away for this camera and a theoretical Bluefin/Yellowfin/Mola Mola housing for it I wanna know ASAP...

pakman 0 Posted January 20, 2008 (edited) I hear ewa-marine will be making a ziplock bag for the Z7.... Edited January 20, 2008 by pakman
DeanB 19 Posted January 20, 2008 No confirmation uncle Drew but i was told they are seriously looking at it...the only obvious downside was lack of lanc for Amphibico but 'maybe' with the remote prospect on the lens it could sway it..I mean the cams flying off the shelf...while i was in the shop someone came in and ordered 10 units(greedy sod)..Or did you mean the Z7....well for me its a topside cam...if they do...fantastic its a bonus. Mikey, thanks sweetie...what have i said now... Dive safe DeanB
Drew 0 Posted January 20, 2008 As a topside camera, the Z7 is a good camera. Canon of course is due to upgrade the XLH1 and that has access to EOS lenses. I hope someone will make an adapter for the Sony to use EOS lenses. Zörk already has an adapter for Nikon and Contax lenses. This is a very interesting camera. Underwater, it remains to be seen if major housing manufacturers will build for it. They'd have to get a dome built for it instead of wide converters. Then they'd have to choose which lenses to accomodate and how.
