gatograbber 0 Posted November 19, 2007 Hello! I have been using a D2000 strobe with my old Nikon CoolPix 5200 and would like to upgrade to a Canon G9. The problem I see is that INON does not seen to support that camera/case yet. Any suggestions on how to hook the INON D2000 strobe with TTL support (no manual, no comments...) to the G9? A user named 'Wetpants' seems to have been able to do this, but I am unable to send him a message. Which case should be used? Should I use the Canon UW case, or an IKELITE case? Thanks for the information to a newposter (and hopefully future active member), helmut.
Wetpants 0 Posted November 20, 2007 Hi gatograbber. Your right, I use the D2000 strobe with the G9 and Canon UW housing. The strobe fires through the optical fibre cable - works no problem. You can attach the cable to the diffuser, or like me drill a small hole and attach the fibre that way. Hope that helps. p.s. you can use all the G9 functions with the Canon UW case unlike what others have posted.
gatograbber 0 Posted November 25, 2007 Howdy, Thanks a lot for the information. I was wondering how you attached the strobe since INON did not release a fiber attach thingy yet. I sent them an email asking, but as usual, no response. I have been investigating and since the G9 has a strobe hotshoe on top, I might sell my D2000 and get an Ikelite case and strobes instead which should be the "cleaner" option. How do you avoid backscatter? Do you cover up the built-in strobe? Thanks & a good Sunday, Helmut.
ce4jesus 1 Posted November 25, 2007 Inon sells a universal fiber optic cable that has one end that is unterminated and that end has several different styles of adapters available. I would contact Ryan and reef photo. link is to the right on this page.
Timmoranuk 10 Posted November 25, 2007 (edited) Hi Helmut Steve Philbrook has always been very responsive: stevep@inonamerica.com My choice for the G9 has been the Ikelite housing. With some reservations, the INON W9 fibre optic cap set can be attached to the diffuser. I have discussed this subject at http://wetpixel.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=21428 If you go with the diffuser as a means of attachment, it is necessary to mask the G9's flash output with infra-red film http://www.inonamerica.com/products.php?pr...at=1&search. The Ikelite strobe option is excellent as the housing is wired ready to go. However maybe, just maybe, sync cables are less reliable than a fibre optic option. Ikelite strobes are weighty and make a system quite top heavy. INON strobes are half the weight so a bouyant arm section will have a more pronounced advantageous effect. Hope this helps. meimei 0 Posted November 27, 2007 Yeah I find the Ike strobes top heavy and always had to fumble and adjust... when handling.. but in the water its ok..... As much as the Ike housing is more 'reliable'... I do miss using the Canon housing as they are ergonomically more friendly.. On the Ike my right hand and fingers get a cramp trying to control the buttons as I try to focus... its not as easy as Canon housing... but I guess for the long-haul.. it just needs getting used to... Tim Hello, I've been using the Ikelite DS-125 for two years now and so far had no "reliability" problem whatsoever with the sync cord. You just need to be careful when attaching the sync cord and make sure the connection is tight, it's only logical. I also don't have any problem with adjusting the strobe in water. Most of the time I put it on TTL and the exposure comes out good so no need to fiddle with manual setting. Its a bit heave but that doesn't really bother me. On the other hand, I have a few friends who use a G9 with Inon D2000 strobes with good results. So, these combination seems to work quite well.
