Islandbound 1 Posted December 4, 2007 Diving off the southern tip of Okinawa yesterday at Yamashirokaigan next to the castle ruins was a beautiful but animal/critter poor experience. Sadly there were very few coral beds among the gorgeous underwater rock formations. This little fish is about 3 inches long and was found at about 30 feet in depth hidden among the coral branches. Leslie 0 Posted December 5, 2007 Do a search for Sebastes cyanostigma & see how it compares.
uw_nikon 0 Posted December 5, 2007 Looks like some kind of scorpion fish. (dorsal and anal fins are poisonous to varying degrees depending on species) Very similar to the rockfish (Sebastidae genus) we have along the west coast of the North America. Islandbound 1 Posted December 5, 2007 The body seems to be similar in overall shape but other than the small dots the coloration is significantly more vivid in the one that I saw. Is this a "real" scorpion with the poisonous traits and all?
Leslie 0 Posted December 5, 2007 The links below show more vivid animals. (I really love this japanese site http://fishpix.kahaku.go.jp/fishimage-e/index.html ) Color also changes between day & night. And yes, it is venomous. This one is supposed to be fairly shy & usually found hiding among coral branches or rocks. http://fishpix.kahaku.go.jp/fishimage-e/de...;PHOTO_ID_OPT=2 http://fishpix.kahaku.go.jp/fishimage-e/de...;PHOTO_ID_OPT=2 http://fishpix.kahaku.go.jp/fishimage-e/se...;PHOTO_ID_OPT=2 http://fishpix.kahaku.go.jp/fishimage/deta...;PHOTO_ID_OPT=
