cor 0 Posted December 22, 2007 Julie has a nice cover in Duiken Magazine of our trip to the Banda Sea (somewhat similar to what Eric is planning in 2009). We also have a 4 page article inside. I think it was the most productive trip we've done in terms of photography. I can definitely recommend going on Eric's trip! Cor

zippsy 0 Posted December 24, 2007 In a local shop I bought some 3 centuries old VOC (east India company) coins that the locals dig up once in a while. A nice thing to remember this trip by. wonderful photos, great stories but I'll bet $10 those coins are fakes. Sorry - they got me too a long time ago. cor 0 Posted December 24, 2007 Well, they cost way less than $10, so I dont care either way Even if they were not fake, they are not worth much of anything (about $1 if they are real). In the netherlands those coins are far from rare. I can go to the local VOC museum (less than 5 minutes by car) and see if they are real, but its really not important. It was still cool to visit Banda Neira and get a small token to remember it by. Cor

Drew 0 Posted December 24, 2007 Cor The fish called Banda tshirt is cool too Too bad they don't have good sizes. The nutmeg kaya is also a nice bread spread. You could've bought a canon too. Now that would've been cool.
Cerianthus 55 Posted December 29, 2007 Just finished reading the article. The VOC might be a great economic memory, but from the point of human rights it is indeed very bad. Makes me think of the infamous quote of our Prime Minister :-). I am always curious on the lenses etc used in a shot, but I dont think that Duiken gives those, except when photography itself is the subject. The only thing is: in the text some specific stuff is mentioned that make me curious as to why there are no pictures attached (as in the specific pygmee species, the snakes under water etc) Gerard
cor 0 Posted December 29, 2007 In case someone wonders, the angle of the article is our dutch past in the banda area and I said that our dutch VOC past is not something to be proud of. I give the editor about 20-30 images, and he picks the ones he wants. I do not second guess, or argue, or whatever. It's his magazine, he's paying for it, and if he wants to use those 8 pictures, no problem. There were of course images of that pygmy (interesting color variety from raja ampat) and sea snakes (gunung api) in the initial set , but he didnt opt to use them. Doesnt bother me a bit Cor ps: you can see those 2 specific images in our tripreport.
