aussie 0 Posted January 25, 2008 Ooh, pretty! How long after a camera is relased is there normally housings available for them?
dhaas 32 Posted January 25, 2008 Amigos, This camera with all the improvements (almost a Baby 40D) will be a hit.......The viewfinder improvement, 14 Bit A/D, DIGIC III, Faster AF, and more including Live View (whether you choose to use it or not) will bring many dSLR shooters into the fold. Or I could be full of it Dave Haas www.haasimages.com
pakman 0 Posted January 25, 2008 nice there goes the pixel creep... ;)14bit and bigger viewfinder is nice... Interesting, no more CF; they've switched to SD memory cards... "comes in silver and black" Do people actually buy the silver model?
Steve Williams 0 Posted January 25, 2008 I feel like I've joined the Camera of the Month Club. I bought a 350D to learn digital, before I could get it in the water the 40D is announced so I bought one and while I'm waiting for a housing for it a minature version is announced. If I'm lucky I'll get the new setup in the water in March before it's obsolete in April. What's the appropriate Smiley face for #$%%*? OK enough bitching, I feel better. Cerianthus 55 Posted January 25, 2008 luckily there is no function on the older models to auto destruct once a new camera is out. Maybe dont mention this in case it gives the brands an idea..... I like the 14 bit, dont like the switch to SD card ..... as for the silver version: I never would....
ktwse 0 Posted January 25, 2008 It has spot metering too. That would be one of the biggest improvements for me, had I still been in the Canon camp. Looks nice, though, and will definitely be a big hit.
pakman 0 Posted January 25, 2008 now let's see if Canon announces a 5D replacement soon...
bartusderidder 0 Posted January 25, 2008 Do people actually buy the silver model? Pak, you of all, should know that silver goes along with pink much better than black
dhaas 32 Posted January 25, 2008 Am I the ONLY shooter here who will buy SILVER if it saves me $10.00? LOL...... Not really, I opt for BLACK with every camera body. Oh, the fashionistas we are dhaas * Rebel XSi waiting list participant!!!!
TheRealDrew 0 Posted January 25, 2008 Oh, the fashionistas we are LOL Diving is so fashionable with the mucous and what not It is kind of funny when I see people all color coordinated with the fins and the rest. Don't know how they do it. But black cameras do go with everything, don't they?
yahsemtough 0 Posted January 25, 2008 So, will the 40D have a successor now to add some differentiation between it and the new DSLR just announced?
TheRealDrew 0 Posted January 25, 2008 (edited) So, will the 40D have a successor now to add some differentiation between it and the new DSLR just announced? Probably not soon since the 40D is so new. The next round will implement these things, seems to be Canon's trend with putting out the __D then shortly therefater bumping the Rebel up with some real new cool features which then wind their way back to the next __D about a year later. I think one of the big things is the body itself, I much prefer the layout of the larger body and being able to access things a bit more without menus. Though this new xSI is tempting. Wish it used CF Cards though Edited January 25, 2008 by TheRealDrew

Wish it used CF Cards though Memory cost is so low, 8GB goes for well under $100, that changing formats is no big deal. You'll probably want a bigger card for the increase in pixels and 14 bits. For underwater use, smaller is good. The one thing about the all the Rebels control that's a pain is not having separate shutter and aperture dials. It's annoying above water and a real pain underwater.

It's annoying above water and a real pain underwater. That is my big reservation with the Rebels, though with the old P&S I had there was always a combo I had to hit to change f/stop or shutter (or go into the menu.) Otherwise the camera's size for travel is appealing and the new specs are nice. I think David Hass mentioned though he uses it all the time and never really has a major concern with no seperate dials.
herbko 0 Posted January 25, 2008 I think David Hass mentioned though he uses it all the time and never really has a major concern with no seperate dials. It's certainly doable, but a hassle. How much hassle depends on the housing. I don't know how Dave's Ike housing handles it. It's a screw in, lock button in my Aquatica A300. To me, it's not easy to tell if it's in or out, and I usually end up having to turn the dial and see if it's the Aperture or shutter I'm changing and go on from there. It was a much bigger hassle in cold water where I have 3mm gloves on.

Do not know if someone was able to get an early copy but the 450D/XSi was just announced the end of January and expected to ship in April in the U.S.
scuba-s 0 Posted February 5, 2008 just wondering if there is anyone that has got a cannon 450d (that is if they are out in the states yet) and if so what do you think of it and does anyone know if and when the housings will roll out for it,I am from australia and don"t expect to see it here for another couple of months ,but from looking at the specs it looks impressive, but it is what it can do in the field that counts. PriusDrIVER 0 Posted February 5, 2008 If I'm lucky I'll get the new setup in the water in March before it's obsolete in April. I hope you are kidding on that statement...nothing "obsoletes" the 350D, 400D, 20D, 30D, 40D, or 5D at this point. If you are buying into the Canon's "its new, it must be better" then good for you, you got sucked in just like Canon hopes you will. I have yet to see any major advancement that would cause the owner of any of these recent model Canon's to consider them obsolete. I'm rather disappointed in Canon (and Nikon) with these new cameras. What about most of these "advancements" makes for better pictures? Do they take better high IOS images with less noise? No, not really. Does the bigger LCD make it a better camera? No, we shot for a long time without an LCD at all. The only possible advancement is the higher bit count in the saved file, but if the imager doesn't really detect the level of dynamic range it allows for its just a marketing number. Sure, the most recent cameras have slightly increased dynamic range...and implement methods of removing/dealing with dust, but for the most part they offer no improvements. I find it rather disappointing that we have all of these newer increased megapixel cameras that really do nothing to give us a better tool for capturing images. Give me a 10MP camera that can shoot a clean image at ISO3200 with improved dynamic range. Who cares if you can instead of 20MP that barely has a usable ISO400? The P&S market is extremely disappointing to me, it seems most of these new cameras have a hard time matching my first digital P&S, the Kodak DC290 circa 1999. I have prints out of this nearly 10-year old beast that most p&s cameras don't seem to match even if it was only 2.1MP. The megapixel is the "horsepower" of the camera industry and does little to help you with why you buy a camera, just as horsepower us a purposeless marketing term that American's fall victim to. Give me less noise. Give me more dynamic range. Give me faster frame rates. Give me better AF. I suppose this is the risk of going digital. You are stuck with the same brand of film every time, the one your camera body manufacturer decides they want you to have and puts into their imager and processing engine. Steve Williams 0 Posted February 8, 2008 I hope you are kidding on that statement... Yeah, I was kidding, sort of, I love my 40, I was railing against the lack of timely support from the housing guys more than anything. One part of the industry is on this tremedous technology curve and the housing guys feel like three people sitting around Gepito's workbench. I'm sure they're working they're butts off to try and keep up but the fact is they are always behind the curve. The fun for us is that to do what we do we need both technogies to sync up and that has been tough to watch. Part of my frustration is that I don't dive without a camera and I don't have a housing yet. I'm drying up out here in the dessert. The good news is that my new housing shipped today . So I'm a happy guy. I plan to use my new setup for a very long time. Steve
Canuck 3 Posted February 9, 2008 So, will the 40D have a successor now to add some differentiation between it and the new DSLR just announced? Still one big difference between the 40D and 450D: 40D is 6.5 fps with a buffer of 17 RAW images 450D is only 3.5 fps with a buffer of 6 RAW images Not much used underwater, but awesome for sports and wildlife.
