G9 Custom Settings

Recommended Posts

A question for G9 owners. On the G9, there are 2 custom settings, C1 and C2, on the mode dial that you can set up the way you want. Does this allow you to set a specific zoom amount that it will go to when you use it? It would be helpful to find the minimum amount of zoom needed to get rid of the vignetting with a wet mount WA lens and have it go there as a default. The other custom setting could be for when it is zoomed out until it almost hits the port (particularly useful when using the short port) so you wouldn't have to bang the lens against the port every time you zoomed for macro shots. I'm considering this camera as a possible replacement for my Olympus C-5050 but don't have enough info. yet to know if it's worth the money to do so. On the C-5050, I have 8 custom settings, and it will remember the amount of zoom on each. Thanks

On the G7 (so I presume the G9 is the same) you can do exactly those things with the custom settings. When you set the custom modes up, every setting of the current mode is remembered (except ISO) including the zoom position.

With the Ikelite housing, short port and an Inon UWL-100 I don't use the zoom at all and vignetting is ok 90% of the time. For the other 10% it was very minor and was easily fixed with a quick crop. Zooming tends to result in slightly blurry corners so I try to avoid doing so.

Have you (or any G9 user who happens to be reading this) had a chance to do any macro shooting with the short port? Does it result in much limitation in comparison to being able to zoom further out with the long port? How about using the UCL-165 with the short port? Thanks.

I've got the short port on my Ike housing 99% of the time, whether shooting macra or WA. The only time when I've h ad an issue with the camera zooming too far is when I've bumped the knob, and it's done it itself. I think you can probably zoom in about half way before it becomes a problem, which I've found is more than enough. You're much better off getting close to something than zooming.

As for the Custom settings, i've got one set up for WA, where I've got it optically zoomed by the smallest amount I can, which works fine with a WA lens on there. I've heard some people say they've got it set with digital zoom, but I wouldn't reccommend it.
