gadip 1 Posted April 2, 2008 Last weekend I took the Nikon D300 to Eilat for first dive. actually 5 dives.... water temp was 22 C Degree. Housing Sea&Sea, 2 Ikelite DS125 Strobes with 105 VR and Tokina 10-77.When use the105 VR use the Ikelite TTL that seems to works good with the Sea&Sea housing, when use the Tokina 10-17 TTL was disabled. I still learn the Camera UW but here you can see some of the results. http://www.gadip.com/scuba/eilat%20mar08/ (keep scroll to the right for more pictures). Thanks for looking Gadi Porat
gadip 1 Posted April 4, 2008 Ok, I see no remarks, so ill try another photo, this time a picture not with the Macro 105VR as the other two pictures were, but with Tokina 10-17 in SEA&SEA housing with the Fish Eye Dome Port. Gadi
Undertow 31 Posted April 4, 2008 nice pics, I really like the lionfish shot. I think people would like to see pics that possibly show where the D300 might really shine like a shot that exploits the Active D-Lighting, such as a sunball, or your experience, good or bad, with the liveview feature. Cheers, Chris

Cheers, Chris Here are some sunball pic :-) from the one time i tried the live view, it took some time to focus, and pictures weren't too sharp, so decide for now to skip till ill know better what i do with it. need to practice on top before get UW. if anyone have recommendations for settings for the live view will be happy to learn. davephdv 0 Posted April 5, 2008 The nudi shot looks a little soft. I have found the 105VR with the D2X to be exceptionally sharp. Did you find this lens sharp with the D300? Do you think this softness is just an internet/jpeg thing? Nice shots.

Thanks Gadi Gadi, These shots of the sun look quite promising with the D300. Did you have Active-D lighting (for improved dynamic range handling) turned on or off? It was turn off. i did not think about it when take the picture..... will try again next time. Thanks Gadi The nudi shot looks a little soft. I have found the 105VR with the D2X to be exceptionally sharp. Did you find this lens sharp with the D300? Do you think this softness is just an internet/jpeg thing? Nice shots. No, I think it is the person behind the Camera not the Camera / jpeg / internet.... more practice will help here. But it is true that with the 105VR I don’t get sharp pictures as I used to get with the D200 and the 60mm Marco. wonder if anyone else had the same impression? With the D300 / 105VR? UW? thanks Gadi
davephdv 0 Posted April 6, 2008 I've shot the 105 VR only with the D2X. It is the sharpest lens I own sharper than the original 105 micro and the 60 micro. It is tricky to shoot UW, but capable of amazing macro shots. Any soft shots I get with it are my fault. The macro shot of the eye appears sharper. What F stop did you use? They say the DX format cameras are diffraction limited above F11; but I usually shoot f16 or 22 for my macro. The improved depth of field helps a lot with the sharpness. With the D300 / 105VR? UW? I used the D300 with the 105mm VR in Sulawesi two weeks ago and I have to say that I love the combination, I was really happy with the results from the 105mm considering it was the first time I used the lens. Focusing was super quick and the image quality was sharp in my opinion. Some shots taken with the 105mm can be seen here: http://www.daveharasti.com/Sulawesi08/ and here are two examples:

Do you have the housing set up so you use manual focus for tweaking and was manual focus necessary? (Trying to figure out what I need to buy to get such beautiful pictures. Also does anybody ever shoot with ambient light underwater? Without filters? Edited April 26, 2008 by DavidScubadiver

Would you mind me asking how close were you to the subject and what aperture did you use?
