I have a lot more to edit and will add to them. Sadly I will not be diving again until next June, but I will be going on the Sardine Run in South Africa. Karl 7 Posted November 12, 2008 Karl.... a million thanks for the information! I just received my piece from Mr. Yeo. After all the bad publicity I've heard about Sea and Sea customer service I was QUITE Impressed with Mr. Yeo's responsiveness and assistance. After a couple e-mail exchanges, in which we determined my vendor here in SoCal didn't have the piece, he rushed it out to me from Singapore.....Free of charge, and with his Compliments. Now THAT is how customer support is supposed to be! Andrew...if you read this board.... a Million thanks Sir! Thanks again to Karl for bringing this possible solution to my attention. Karl, have you used the piece with sucess? I know you said you modified it to reduce backscatter...results? Thoughts?? Thanks Greg Hi Greg - PM'd you thanks. Basically I blacked it out by masking off the bits that didn't need to be black and sprayed it black. Have used it once since then - due to the bad weather here in the Perth region of Western Australia and it worked well. A small bit of flash still escapes but not enough to cause any problems. Can't wait to get back in the water to try it out fully. We are planning a trip to Rottnest Island (just off of Perth) next month as well as down to Busselton (2 1/2 hours south of Perth) to dive the Busselton Jetty and the wreck of the ex HMAS Swan - all are excellent dives with great photographic opportunities, so I should give it a real good work out then. Karl Just an update since my last post. I have been using the adaptor and have had great success - especially with it being blacked out, it has reduced the backscatter from the internal flash to nil. I am also now using a new technic for the positioning of the main flash (YS27) to completely rid backscatter from it. The method is described in Martin Edge's book 'Underwater Photography - Tips and Technics Edition 3'. Bascially for macro mode shooting you place the flash to the top of the camera pointing almost directly ahead so that the bottom of the flash pattern highlights your subject rather than the centre of the flash. For wide angle you bring your flash in close and angle it away from the camera (outwards). It seems to be working well for me so far. Hope this helps. I'm going to have to pick up this book your talking about. Strobe placement seems to be one of my biggest issues, especially for macro. What had also helped for me a bit is not getting too close. So instead of getting an inch or 2 away...I get 6 inches and zoom just a smidge. If it's not too much zoom it seems to be fine resolution/grain wise, plus my strobe hits the subject better. I blacked my adaptor out too...seems to be working with regards to the internal flash and backscatter like you mention. Greg
Karl 7 Posted November 14, 2008 (edited) Greg, I get to about 3 - 4cm away (approx 1 inch) with my macro shots and I and I zoom in and out as required from there. I find it too hard to get any closer - but then that might just have to do with where I am acutually diving . My avatar photo was taken about 5cm away - I think it looks the goods. Overall - so far I really like the camera and I am having a great time using it. Edited November 14, 2008 by Karl
mbailey 0 Posted November 15, 2008 Wow!!! Great shots Bro!! Were you shooting in auto??? Thanks, I shot in manual mode the entire time. I found it very easy to dial i n the exposure with the strobe. Indonesia is an amazing destination. Lots of current though.
sideways 3 Posted November 16, 2008 Thanks, I shot in manual mode the entire time. I found it very easy to dial i n the exposure with the strobe. Indonesia is an amazing destination. Lots of current though. My last dive I started messing around in aperture mode, with promising results. My problem, even with my new prescription mask....is reading some of the finer stuff on the viewscreen UW. I do want to start using the manual mode though.....Im not all that impressed with the cameras autofocus.

I have a similar problem reading the info in the viewfinder, I am going to add a focus light and I am getting some 2.0 diopters for my mask. I found the autofocus to be just fine, I used manual exposure mode.
Karl 7 Posted November 17, 2008 (edited) I have a focus light that I got from 10Bar - www.10bar.com - from Hong Kong and it works a treat, I believe it is also the one sold by Fantasea. It has a built in light sensor that turns the focus light off when it detects the flash therefore negating any hotspot or backscatter issues. At the moment I have it mounted on the housing with the hotshoe adaptor but after reading Martin Edges' book I am trying new methods with my flash - so on my next dive I am going to mount the flash on the housing and the focus light on the arm and see how I go. oskar 6 Posted November 19, 2008 I only found out about them when I visited the Sea and Sea shop in Singapore - I haven't seen any in Australia. If you email Andrew Yeo at seansea@pacific.net.sg or telephone +65 6337 6334 he will help you as he had a box full of them when I was there. On a side note - I have painted one of the ones I got black on the outside in an attempt to reduce the backscatter from the internal flash, so hopefully this will work. Karl Coupld you post a pic of one of these here? It may be easier to make one that ordering one from Singapore, or dou you know if they are available inte europe? cheers

Karl 7 Posted November 26, 2008 Just noticed that Ricoh have relased (in Australia anyway - we are probably a year behind everyone else ) the new Ricoh DX 200 compact digital camera. From the photos of it that I saw it looks almost as if it is the DX 100 (which is what our camera is) with the internal functions / software etc improved - it will be interesting to see if it will fit straight into our cases without any modification Karl

Too bad, maybe they will make the software upgrades available. Mark

It may be easier to make one that ordering one from Singapore, or dou you know if they are available inte europe? cheers The one is an old model and there are prone to flooding which was the experience by many Hong Kong divers. Here is some new model. http://www.i-divesite.com/catalog.asp?catid=40693 I guess Dx1G is a good camera and here are my photos with it. http://www.flickr.com/photos/cywong/sets/72157607904453785/ I used to use A mode as I found the LCD in M mode is too dark for me and my eyes. I'm using Inon strobe and do have have the problem of miss fire mentioned so far. Edited December 4, 2008 by XCY

It really gives me hope...LOL, that I can get those kind of results from this Cam. Well done!!! I think I have to crown you the "NudiKing" Are you shooting in Manual strictly?? Specificaly in regards to focus...auto focus or manual? Your macro images are quite a bit sharper than mine, and I'm in auto. Gracias Greg

Your macro images are quite a bit sharper than mine, and I'm in auto. Gracias Greg Thanks Greg! I used to use A mode most of the time because of the LCD in M mode is too dark for me. If I need to use M mode, I have to turn my focus light brighter for me to see and for the DX1G to focus. Auto focus is ok, especially if you use a focus light but the response of the camera is not fast at tall. I use manual focus when I was not able to use focus light. For example, the mandarin fishes mating pictures, I had to preset the focus at about 8 cm, use a large f-stop for better depth of field and push the button when the fishes came together. I guess nudis are good models. They are colorful, don't move a lot and you can get really close. Have fun with the Dx1G!
Karl 7 Posted December 25, 2008 (edited) Hi all, long time no posted but I have been busy out practising my photography and I am slowly getting better and understanding my camera a bit better; however, I have one annoying problem that I can't seem to fix or work out. When I am in Manual 'M' mode so I can adjust Aperture and speed etc my LCD screen is so dark I can not see what I am trying to focus on until I press the shutter button and the image briefly appears on the screen I have tried using my focus light to no avail. I have noticed that the EV+ / EV- bar is displaying right at the bottom of the bar (EV-) so I am wondering if this has anything to do with it - i.e. my settings in my camera might be incorrectly set somewhere etc. So if anyone can give me some advice as to what I might be doing wrong it would be greatly appreciated. Toni Vega 0 Posted January 15, 2009 Hello every one, Can someone tell me where I can get the FO adapter in the Netherlands? And in wich manual must y yuse the strobe manual 1 or 2? Regards Toni
Karl 7 Posted February 10, 2009 Been awhile since I was last here and have a new question. Was surfing the net the other day and found a 'ring flash' adapter (for want of a better description) for the DX-1G - it clips onto the front of the camera and directs light from the internal flash down to the lens - thereby negating the need for an external strobe as it directs all of the required light around the lens and onto the subject. So has anyone out there got one and used it or seen it in action? I am interested ingetting one but want to see if it is worth it and not a gimmick. Thanks.
