Alex_Mustard 0 Posted May 6, 2008 Hi Tim, This looks to me like a specific "BSoUP" style portfolio. Is this correct? If so BSoUP has a very stylized take on how portfolios should look. The most important factor is balance of colours, compositions etc. The 6 images should work as one. The three circles (jacks, lionfish, turtle) work quite well, but the other three images don't. I am no expert on this and rarely win BSoUP portfolio competitions! So don't listen to me! Alex
ralphy 1 Posted May 6, 2008 If so BSoUP has a very stylized take on how portfolios should look. Alex Don't they ever....... Tim, if it is for a p/folio comp. then a browse of the BSoUP website should give you some ideas - plus there's a link to an article discussing some pointers on p/folio composition. Also, have a look at my local clubs newsletter: Bristol U/W group which has some portfolios in. The winner, Alan James has given us a lot of good ideas on how to make an eye-catching portfolio, I'll see if I can find my notes & PM them to you. Oh and if you 'don't listen to Alex' then ignore me too: as you'll see in the newsletter I came 6th in the competition! R
segal3 0 Posted May 6, 2008 I could see replacing the bottom three with other photos emphasizing faces... The crab seems a bit monochromatic compared to all other images.

I thought that a bit of inside information might help, though I can never work out what the connection is in a BSoUP portfolio! I can't decide if it is best to be thematic, or link style (colours, shapes etc). I have some trouble in seeing how some portfolios gel, so I thought that I'd ask for advice... The connection here was to shoot common Indopacific species and create an overall shape. I wasn't too happy with six squares/circles, and so chose two longer frames to try and bring the eye in from the outside of the portfolio space. Originally it wasn't black, but a Powerpoint slide with the images floating above a neutral grey background with drop shadows - I liked that! Tim B)
