Print vs Slide Film

Recommended Posts

I know that the rule was that slide film will give you true colors where as prints are subject to color variation in the prints.

But now since I scan my pictures does it really matter what I shot? I can scan negatives or slides the results should be the same shouldn't they be?

I don't think slide film ever gave true colours different films had different characteristics and gave different results. However as the processed film is the end result it isn't subject to the vagaries of the printing process.

Slide film has a smaller latitude than print film so it's easier to loose shadow detail or blow highlights.

Once you start to scan film the differences are usually less pronounced as much will depend on the ability of the scanner to render shadows and highlights. Also the settings in the scanner software and subsequent editing will effect the final result as much as the choice of film stock.
