Gates Housing for Sony PMW-EX1

Recommended Posts

It does look pretty impressive!

I wonder what the out of water weight will be when you chuck on a monitor, super wide port, lights etc?

The stand slides off and then Gates make different attachments for lights / tripod etc. The system works well and is quick to change between different options.

Hello all,

With every generation of a Gates product we endeavor to make meaningful, practical improvements that do not compromise the durability/reliability of the housing. In this regard, we made some changes for the EX1 that may be of interest:

1) We have a new approach for buoyancy (well, new for Gates). We borrowed some ideas from IMAX and employ 4 and 8 oz trim weights that can be added/removed as needed for just the right buoyancy. Remove them as you add lights/monitor/tripod/etc. You can even move them forward/aft for trim, and top/bottom if you desire for changing the center of gravity. It's intended to be very flexible and configurable. This approach will be carried forward with new housings including DEEP RED.

2) The camera tray is vastly improved as well. No more tools required to mount the camera, and the tray locks into place with two rotating latches. Slick and easy.

3) The controls are the best we've made yet -- at your fingertips and easy to use. Are electronic controls still easier to use? You decide....

Cheers,

John

It looks and sounds great John. Especially the buoyancy solution if it means no more PVC tubes :D

Re the controls really the only one I prefer as electronic is momentary auto focus, as I mentioned before. Could I do that on the new housing without a fidget and a wobble?

Also what's the flip diopter status?

Nick,

Momentary Auto Focus was too tight with other controls to get into the repertoire. But the same thing can be accomplished using the A/M focus switch. In fact, the auto focus has a neat 'focus assist' feature. While in AF you can still adjust the manual focus ring to lock onto different part of the image, and the camera will then track that subject. I've tried it on land it seems to work well. I can see using this underwater, particularly for macro.

He didn't get bent shooting pike in Stoney Cove did he?

haha no it was on an HSE course - we were all narked out of our skulls :D hehe.

:):guiness:

Getting bent at 3m in Stoney filming Pike would be bloody hilarous though! - well as hilarious as a bend could be - which really isn't funny - but hey you get my drift! :D

As to the Gates EX1 housing then it looks a beast. It would be no1 choice for me though if I was in the market for one after being so pleased with my V1 housing. :)

Cheers, Simon

Just got the list through...

Housing with NO ports $6,860.00... Their new SWP44C SW $4,948.00 :guiness: full zoom, dist free, 120degree FOV

This is going to be expensive..!!! I reckon the price in the UK for housing only will be around £4200...Holy moly... I reckon about £7000+ for a decent set-up..

Although the housing looks amazing !!

Weight in water: Slightly Neg...though adjustable

In air: 23lbs (10.5kg) without camera...

Optional internal flip diopter... Hmmmm!!!! :D should be included in my books...

16.5"L X 11.8"H X 10.5"W...Big ol piece of metal....

Well we will wait and see....

Sorry for the brief summary.. But I haven't got the time to mess about... Bars open :);)

Downloading now for a look.

Did I read EDIUS in there somewhere.... :D

Yeh Yeh it does not handle 1920/1080 30p yet but that's not a Blu_Ray format anyhow so if you shoot in it you have to change. :)

Not to sure about the footage - certainly it's not the tropical blue stuff that I'm usually in.

JohnE sent me a prototype EX1 housing to show at PMA (Australia) in Brisane last week.

The housing featured all things that you have come to expect from the Pro-level Gates Product amazingly fitted into a housing no bigger than the Z1 unit. ( I put them side by side )

I can see this unit featuring in many major productions in the future.

Hey same water colour as here.

I clicked on the 1920/1080 link and got the 960/540 80 meg clip....just cannot get good web people now days. :D

Looking forward to seeing clear water footage and zoomed in up close on a wobbly subject with lights to see it there is any motion blur from that 35mbps compression rate.

Peter send over the rig and I will go and shoot some Floppy SHarks with it. :)

Hey Peter ... I have the camera here (not mine of course :D) ... but you'll have to send it to South Africa and pay the duty on the housing :)

Auntie Beeb will accept at B camera standard 15% for now.
